The Ryle wrestling team is poised for another successful state tournament run after placing third at the state duals on Saturday at Henry Clay High School.
The Raiders lost 31-29 in the semifinals to Louisville Trinity, which lost to LaRue County in the finals.
"We could have won," Raiders coach Tim Ruschell said. "Trinity won seven matches and we won seven. But our heavyweight had their heavyweight in a pin and lost the hold a second before he got it, and that would have been a big points swing. The LaRue County coach, Gary Canter, said he wanted no part of us in the final because of the matchups and was happy to get Trinity."
Ryle's T.J. Ruschell, Court Mace and Connor Coyle, who committed last week to the United States Navy Academy, went undefeated during the duals, each posting 5-0 records. Ryle heavyweight Jason Maine, who is known as "Gerber Baby" because of his facial resemblance to the image on the baby food containers, went 4-1.
