Ryle blanks Boone County, 14-0

by Marc Harden, NKY Enquirer             Ryle blanks Boone County, 14-0

The fierce football rivalry between Boone County and Ryle resumed Friday at Owen Hauck Stadium in Florence and both teams had similar agendas: Get a win and stay in contention in the Class 6A district race following a slow start to the season.

On a night when long gainers were hard to come by, it was Ryle that received the biggest boost from big plays during a 14-0 victory over the Rebels.

"So glad we got the win," said Raiders running back Tanner Pulice, who accounted for 167 total yards. "I thought our defense played great."

After being shut out twice, Ryle recorded its first shutout of the season while limiting the Rebels to 65 total yards.

"We got a ton of three-and-outs," Pulice said. "And we got the scores."

The Raiders hit paydirt on their first possession when Pulice scooted into the end zone on a five-yard run around left end, capping a 42-yard drive set up by Pulice's 54-yard opening kickoff return.

"Tanner's a workhorse," Ryle coach Bryson Warner said of the senior, who rushed 34 times for 113 yards. "And I thought our special teams did a really good job."

Ryle made it 14-0 when track speedster Nick Kennedy fielded a punt and returned it 89 yards for a score with 11 seconds left in the first half. Kennedy, a top-10 finisher in the 100 meters at last year's Class 3A state track and field meet, broke two tackles at the Boone 25 and outran the defense for the touchdown.

Both teams wanted momentum as they head into the back half of the schedule, and Ryle got it. The Raiders (3-3) are ranked seventh in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll. The unranked Rebels (1-6) won for the first time last week after losing their first five.

"There were a lot of five-yard penalties and dropped passes," Boone coach Rick Thompson said as he characterized the play of his offense. Rebels quarterbacks finished 1-for-10 passing for seven yards. Boone's vaunted rushing attack was held to 58 on 1.8 yards per carry.

Ryle beat Boone for the fourth year in a row and tied the Rebels in the District 6 standings, at 1-1. The Raiders were in control from the start, outgaining Boone 100 yards to 26 in the first half. Ryle totaled 149 yards in the game, all of it on the ground as Raiders quarterback Jake Ashley, subbing for starter Nathan Davis, threw four incompletions.

Boone did not advance deep into Ryle territory until late in the third quarter when Dre Nolan recovered a fumbled punt return at the Raiders' 23. But the Rebels went backward, losing two yards on the possession. The big defensive play came from end Alex Brownell, who pressured quarterback Jesse Schulze into a misfire on second down. Brownell finished with five tackles, two for losses. Daniel Osbourne led Ryle with seven tackles.

Schulze rotated with Blake Ingolia at quarterback for Boone until Ingolia left the game early in the third after receiving a hard hit and struggling to the sideline with the help of a coach.

Following Boone's ill-fated attempt to get in the end zone, Ryle took over at its own 21 with 1:46 to go in the third. The Raiders were forced to punt, putting the ball near midfield and giving the Rebels another chance to pull within a touchdown. But the Raiders snuffed the drive before Boone reached the 50.

Ryle Boys Golf Team is Regional Runnerup

Ryle finished runner up behind Covington Catholic yesterday shooting a 312 vs Cov Cath's 309. The team now qualifies for the state golf tournament. Go Raiders!

Paul Clancy finished 3rd place overall, Logan Gamm finished 5th place overall, and Hunter Hughes finished 8th place overall. The team will be heading down to state next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Austin Merchant - 2013 National Merit Semifinalist

Congratulations to Ryle senior Austin Merchant for being named a 2013 National Merit Semifinalist. Austin currently attends class at WKU's Gatton Academy in Bowling Green, KY.

Seven Gatton Academy seniors have been recognized as semifinalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program, an honor which potentially opens the door to college scholarship opportunities.

Over 1.5 million students entered the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Students are tested in math, critical reasoning, and writing. The 16,000 Semifinalists honored are the highest-scoring entrants in their state and represent less than one percent of each state’s high school seniors.

Since the Gatton Academy’s inception in 2007, the Gatton Academy has seen 52 students named as National Merit Semifinalists.

For these Gatton Academy seniors, it’s a great way to begin their final year of high school even as they focus on the college admissions process ahead. According to Gatton Academy Director Dr. Tim Gott, this is just the beginning of a busy—and rewarding—year.

“With this recognition, these students have earned a key that will open tremendous educational opportunities,” Gott said. “We look forward to seeing what these students will accomplish in the days ahead.”

To be considered in the rigorous competition for National Merit Scholarships, Semifinalists must advance to the Finalist level of the competition by meeting additional standard and fulfilling several requirements. These include having a record of very high academic performance of college preparatory course work, submitting SAT scores that confirm PSAT performance, and being fully endorsed and recommended by a high school official.

Since students take the qualifying PSAT exam in October of their junior year of high school, much of the preparation stems from learning opportunities during their freshman and sophomore years of high school. The Gatton Academy builds on those experiences to provide students with a robust application and preparation for the SAT, a critical component in becoming a finalist.

“It is an incredible honor to be named a National Merit Semifinalist,” Gott said. “These students have demonstrated a level of excellence that very few can claim. All of us, the Gatton staff and the schools they represent back home, value the opportunity to have worked with such outstanding young people.”
2013 Gatton Academy National Merit Semifinalists:

Ryle 21 - DeSales 10

By: Dan Clasgens

The Ryle Raiders hadn’t played since Aug. 30 and the extra time to regroup paid big dividends as they traveled to Columbus to take down the DeSales Stallions, 21-10.

Ryle (2-2) had only managed to score 55 points per through three contests, but the ground game got going in this one to help them prevail.

Defense was the story early as both teams struggled to move the chains during the first half as DeSales (1-3) went to the locker room with a 3-0 halftime lead.

The Raiders would go ahead 7-3 with a third-quarter 1-yard touchdown run by Alex Brownwell. The lead would not last long though as the Stallions as the Stallions matched them with a 1-yard TD run to close out the third quarter.

On this night Ryle would save the best for last as they scored 14 unanswered points in the game’s final frame.

Senior defensive back Daniel Osborne started the fireworks with a 20-yard fumble recovery in the quarter’s opening minutes to give the Raiders the lead for good at 14-10. Classmate Travis Pulice sealed the deal with a 1-yard TD run, his first of the season, later in the frame.

After back-to-back games against opponents from the Buckeye State the Raiders return home to Borland Stadium next week as they open district play by hosting Simon Kenton (4-0).

Ryle students attend leadership conference

Community Recorder

The state officer Sydney Gebka and the regional officers Emily Ramstetter and Katie Norman, all from Ryle High School, attended the 58th annual Kentucky Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Leadership Conference in Hardinsburg June 11-13.

The theme for this year was Kentucky FCCLA: Olympic Training Camp. The Kentucky organization’s regional officers learned about their duties from state officers and gained valuable leadership skills.

This year the Freshman Academy had 20 freshmen and eighth-grade students participate in team building leadership activities. This was a series of workshops for incoming freshmen or sophomores that have a desire to take their leadership in the organization further.

About 200 officers and advisers across the state were informed of Lifesmarts by former state officer alumni member Seth Woods, National Lifesmarts coordinator. Woods also discussed his leadership while being a state officer.

While attending Olympic Training Camp members attended workshops on individual officer training, regional meetings, competitive events, organization awards, icebreakers, etiquette, public speaking and running for office.

A business session was held to vote on the Kentucky organization’s 2012-2013 goals, which are:

Goal 1: Each chapter will increase their membership by 13 percent or 13 Members.

Goal 2: Increase state degree participants.

Goal 3: Increase the state-wide scholarship donation.

Goal 4: Each chapter will participate in a state wide community service project.

Goal 5: Promote and publicize the organization at the chapter, region and state level.

If you would like more information about Kentucky Family, Career and Community Leaders of America or how you can help the Ryle High School chapter, contact the family and consumer science teachers and organization advisers Robyn Bain and Susan Dews from Ryle High School or visit www.fcclainc.org or www.kyfccla.org.

Ryle golf preparing for tournaments

By James Weber

When Ryle and Covington Catholic get together on a golf course, there is always a sense of urgency.

The boys golf rivals have been the top two finishers in the regional tournament for most of the last decade, so good shooting was expected when they met for a dual match Aug. 30 at Triple Crown Country Club in Union.

Ryle lost by two shots, 154-156 in the team match. Six players started for each team, with the top four scores counting. The teams will play again the week of Sept. 10 as they had to reschedule a match originally set for Sept. 4.

Ryle head coach Jonathan Ehlen, a former Ryle standout, said the team has been solid but not spectacular.

“The boys had a rough day,” Ehlen said. “They struggled. When you don’t win on your home turf, it’s frustrating. They’re still coming together as a team. They haven’t really come together and played to where everyone plays a solid round.”

Logan Gamm and Zach Adams scored a 38 in the nine-hole match, 2-over par. Austin Squires and Austin Zapp each shot 40. Paul Clancy, Ryle’s top golfer, had an academic conflict and did not play in the match.

Ehlen said while the loss was disappointing, every match is just a rehearsal for the regional tournament Sept. 24 at Boone Links in Burlington.

Ryle and Cov Cath will first reunite on that course Saturday, Sept. 8, when most of Northern Kentucky gathers for the Steve Flesch Invitational, an 18-hole tournament. Steve Flesch is a veteran professional golfer from Union.

“The Flesch is a preview tournament for the regional,” Ehlen said. “All of our direct competition will be there and it is also at Boone Links, which is where the region is. It’s a good preview of where we are and what we need to shoot at the region. We get to size ourselves up against Cov Cath again.”

Both Ehlen and Cov Cath head coach Robb Schneeman agreed that a midweek nine-hole match doesn’t necessarily predict where the two teams will finish in the postseason.

“In nine-hole matches, it’s more or less ‘We have to come out and play,’” Ehlen said. “It’s a long day at school, they don’t get to warm up, they don’t really get to hit balls. They just hop out of the car in school mode, get on the first tee and go. An 18-hole tournament: It’s day and night difference, a completely different mindset and focus level. The matches are more or less a great learning experience, and it’s a chance to have fun with a rival school. I’m not expecting them to go out and break school records.”

Clancy, Gamm and Adams all played in the state tournament last year. Gamm and Adams are sophomores. Ryle’s main task this year is replacing Blake Hamilton, who was third at state last year and spent some time at Triple Crown Thursday rooting on the Raiders during the Cov Cath match.
