Ryle Wins 21-6 at Simon Kenton

Raiders get back to Commonwealth, win column vs. Pioneers

by Richard Skinner, Enquirer Contributor

After suffering back-to-back blowout losses to Ohio powers in which Ryle was still adjusting to a season-ending injury to star running back Travis Elliott, the Raiders showed on Friday night they're still going to be a force in Kentucky.

Ryle got two big-play touchdowns in the first six minutes of the game, and its defense held off Simon Kenton for a 21-6 victory at Chlorine Menefee Stadium in Independence.

Ryle (3-2, 1-0 Class 6A) improved to 3-0 against Kentucky teams this season and has outscored them 105-31.

The Raiders were outscored the last two weeks by Colerain and Columbus St. Francis DeSales 79-7. Elliott was injured in the first quarter of the loss to Colerain.

"When you lose what we think was the best player in the state there's going to be an adjustment period so it was great to go against those two teams to find out what our strengths and weaknesses are," said Ryle coach Bryson Warner. "We have a lot of guys that can still execute a lot of plays. We're a different team, but we can certainly still be good."

Ryle Defense Too Much For Simon Kenton

By Terry Boehmker, Ky Post

INDEPENDENCE, Ky. - When Ryle took a 14-0 lead in the first six minutes of its Class 6A district game against Simon Kenton on Friday, it looked like the Raiders would put up some big numbers on offense.

It didn’t turn out that way, but the Ryle defense played so well that it didn’t really matter.
Ryle came away with a 21-6 victory because Simon Kenton wasn’t able to make big plays or sustain drives on offense.

The Pioneers ended up averaging just 4.2 yards per play and they were 5-of-18 on third- and fourth-down conversions against Ryle’s stubborn defense.

“They’ve got a great run game and that’s the first thing you’ve got to stop,” said Ryle coach Bryson Warner. “If you shut that down, they’re not comfortable if they don’t have a running game going on. So we were able to do that, and then zero in on their pass plays.”

The Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership

The 2011 Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership has selected nine (9) parents with children within the Boone County School District to attend the institute sessions which began September 9th and will run throughout the fall, ending November 5th.

The institute is designed to encourage and train parents to become more effective advocates for Kentucky's public education system. It also prepares them to work with other parents in their schools and communities. Since research clearly shows that both students and schools benefit when parents are involved in education,we recommend that parents become involved with the training.

A True Kentucky Hero

Earlier today Dakota Meyer was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Obama at the White House.  Meyer, of Greensburg, Kentucky, is a former member of the U.S. Marine Corps and is one of the few living soldiers to receive the award.  Below is an excerpt from the official proclamation granting Meyer the highest honor awarded for valor by the U.S. military.

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the repeated risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as a member of Marine Embedded Training Team 2-8, Regional Corps Advisory Command 3-7, in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, on 8 September 2009. When the forward element of his combat team began to be hit by intense fire from roughly 50 Taliban insurgents dug-in and concealed on the slopes above Ganjgal village, Corporal Meyer mounted a gun-truck, enlisted a fellow Marine to drive, and raced to attack the ambushers and aid the trapped Marines and Afghan soldiers. During a six hour fire fight, Corporal Meyer single-handedly turned the tide of the battle, saved 36 Marines and soldiers and recovered the bodies of his fallen brothers. Four separate times he fought the kilometer up into the heart of a deadly U-shaped ambush. During the fight he killed at least eight Taliban, personally evacuated 12 friendly wounded, and provided cover for another 24 Marines and soldiers to escape likely death at the hands of a numerically superior and determined foe. On his first foray his lone vehicle drew machine gun, mortar, rocket grenade and small arms fire while he rescued five wounded soldiers. His second attack disrupted the enemy’s ambush and he evacuated four more wounded Marines. Switching to another gun-truck because his was too damaged they again sped in for a third time, and as turret gunner killed several Taliban attackers at point blank range and suppressed enemy fire so 24 Marines and soldiers could break-out. Despite being wounded, he made a fourth attack with three others to search for missing team members. Nearly surrounded and under heavy fire he dismounted the vehicle and searched house to house to recover the bodies of his fallen team members. By his extraordinary heroism, presence of mind amidst chaos and death, and unselfish devotion to his comrades in the face of great danger, Corporal Meyer reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.”

Meyer has stated numerous times that he is not a hero and should have acted sooner and should have done more to save his fellow soldiers.  His modesty and humble attitude only make him a greater person and a true hero.

Beating Boone bodes well for Ryle

By Marc Harden, Enquirer Contributor

Ryle girls' soccer coach Edmundo Echeverria is wary of high-scoring Boone County as the Raiders and Rebels attempt to unseat three-time defending district champion St. Henry, which lost eight starters from last season's state championship team.

Ryle, which hasn't won a 17th District crown since 2006, and Boone, without one since 2007, view 2011 as a year of opportunity. The Raiders enhanced their chances of district success by defeating the Rebels 1-0 on Wednesday in a seeding game at Ryle.

Lauren Zembrodt scored the lone goal off a pass from Lauren Duggins at the 30:44 mark of the first half.

"Lauren had three people on her and I told her to lay it off middle, and I came down with nobody on me and shot it," said Zembrodt, who scored for the third time this season.

Ryle's reconfigured defense and goalkeeper Lindsay Otis, who turned aside four shots, made the lead stand up over the final 50 minutes.

"I thought we played great defense and did a good job of controlling pace," Echeverria said. "We can't get into a kickball match with Boone because it'll hurt you, so I'm proud of the girls for having moments of brilliant soccer."

Schmalzl dedicated to Boone schools

By Sarah Hardee, Enquirer Contributor

With continued budget cuts, increasingly stringent core content standards and a push to get more students involved in extracurricular activities, local parent volunteer Mary Schmalzl's goal is to make life a little easier for teachers - and a little more fun for students.

Schmalzl, of Walton, has been part of the PTA and volunteered within Boone County Schools for nearly 20 years. As all three of her children have progressed through New Haven Elementary, Gray Middle and Ryle High schools, she has brought a variety of extracurricular activities and community service opportunities to the schools.

Over the years, she's coached successful Odyssey of the Mind, Math Counts and Future Problem Solving teams, and helped organize a variety of events, including Ryle's annual craft show. Recently, she started a Community Problem Solving Team, which allows students to use problem-solving skills and community service hours to help solve problems locally.

"All of these programs help kids become better thinkers," said Schmalzl, who currently coaches both Gray and Ryle's Future Problem Solving teams, serves as the team photographer for Ryle's girls' soccer team and is still an active member of the school's PTA.

The programs are still flourishing at the schools, and Schmalzl's Future Problem Solving team at Ryle just placed seventh overall at the Future Problem Solving Program International Conference, and two students from her teams - Tess Chaffee from Gray and Lenny Ivey from Ryle - placed first at the conference.
