Leap Day drive at Ryle feeds 10,000 kids

Union Recorder article link

UNION  Ryle students used a special day to help a special cause.

Teacher Mary Jo Rechtin challenged students to make Leap Day, Feb. 29, a day to help feed hungry children in Third World countries. It all started when Rechtin heard St. Timothy Parish gave a grant to Kids Against Hunger.

Kids Against Hunger collects money and can purchase, package and ship enough food to feed six children for $1.50.

“I thought ‘I’m going to challenge the students of Ryle to feed 6,000 kids,’” Rechtin said.  Rechtin presented the program to students and set a goal of collecting $1,500 by Leap Day, which was about two weeks of collecting.  “The kids just went absolutely over the top,” Rechtin said.

Students started getting creative with ways to help collecting.  “My kids were intrigued they could do so much for so little,” Rechtin said.  Many students convinced their parents to offer matching donations and a few students made TV commercials that were shown during school announcements.

“They were outstanding,” Rechtin said.

After collecting about $1,000, Rechtin visited St. Timothy to tell them the school was collecting for the program. That day, program coordinators were about to give up on sending out a summer shipment because they were $1,000 short of what they needed to send the shipment.

The final Leap Day count brought in $2,652, which means 10,608 children will be fed by students from Ryle.

“It just went beyond our wildest dreams,” Rectin said.

Ryle's Crittendon named a finalist for Miss Kentucky Basketball

Congratulations to Jenna Crittendon for this state honor!

Five finalists named for Miss Basketball

Posted: 12:35pm on Mar 9, 2012; Modified: 8:58pm on Mar 9, 2012

Five high school players were named finalists Friday for Kentucky's 2012 Miss Basketball award.
The five are Jeanna Crittenden of Ryle, Sydney Moss of Boone County, Kendall Noble of Perry County Central, Jasmine Whitfield of South Oldham, and April Wilson of Manual.
Of the five players named Friday as finalists for Miss Basketball, only one is still playing in the State Tournament: Manual's April Wilson.
Speaking after the Lady Crimsons routed Montgomery County in the quarterfinals, the 5-foot-7½ guard said being a Miss Basketball finalist is "a blessing."
"It's not one of my main goals, obviously, because I'm an unselfish person. But it would be a huge blessing if I got it. But my eyes are on something else right now — a state championship."
The five finalists for Mr. Basketball will be announced during next week's PNC/KHSAA Boys' State Tournament in Rupp Arena.
The Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation, which sponsors the Mr. and Miss Basketball awards and the Kentucky-Indiana summer all-star series, changed the process for selecting the top boy and girl senior in the state this year. In years past, Mr. and Miss Basketball were determined by a vote of coaches. This year, the coaches' votes determine the top five candidates for Mr. and Miss Basketball. In the weeks following the state tournaments, some sports media, along with former Mr. and Miss Basketball honorees, will vote to select Mr. and Miss Basketball.
The winners will be announced at an awards dinner in Louisville on April 28 in a Heisman Trophy-type ceremony.

Preparing for the ACT on March 6, 2012

Juniors attending Kentucky public high schools will take the ACT, the nation’s most widely accepted college entrance exam, on Tuesday, March 6th.  The ACT test assesses high school students' general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work.  Higher scores may also qualify students for a bonus award through the Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES) program.

To do their best, students should follow these tips from the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA), which administers the KEES program:
    ·         Study, take notes and do your homework in your regular high school classes.  Retain the information you learn rather than “dumping” it  after the next test.
    ·         Take practice tests. ACT offers sample tests at www.actstudent.org, and practice tests are included in the ACT booklet school counselors receive each year. If those aren’t enough, you can buy larger practice books at any bookstore.
    ·         Take advantage of ACT classes. Many high schools and colleges offer such classes for a small fee.
    ·         Answer the questions you’re sure about first, then go back and tackle the others. But don’t spend too much time on any one question.
    ·         Remember that your first gut feeling is more often right than wrong.
    ·         If you can eliminate one answer, you have a one-in-three chance of guessing the right answer. If you can eliminate two, you have a 50-50 chance. If you’ve answered the questions you’re sure of and made educated guesses on others but have no clue about the rest, fill in any circle. The ACT doesn’t count off for wrong answers, so you haven’t hurt yourself if you guess wrong.
    ·         Make sure you get a good night’s rest the night before and you leave home early enough to get to the test site on time. And don’t forget to bring some ID.
