Tragic School Shooting in CT

This message was sent home via email to all Ryle households with email addresses in Infinite Campus.

As you are probably aware, a horrific act of violence occured today at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.  I cannot begin to imagine the pain and suffering to be faced by these families and everyone associated with the school.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved.

I want to remind you that the safety and security of our students and staff is our first priority.  When school resumes on Monday, we will reach out to our students to reflect on the importance of life and to also provide any assistance for our students if necessary.  Governor Beshear has directed that all schools and state office buildings lower their flags this coming week to halfmast in honor of the victims in this morning's shootings.

As a faculty and staff, we will also review and reinforce our school crisis plans and emergency procedures.  It is my hope that we never have to utilize these plans, but we will work hard to be as prepared as possible for emergency situations.

Please take extra time this weekend to hug your family and friends.  Take care.

Sincerely,
Matthew Turner

Raiders win on 'good basketball'

by the NKY Enquirer  Raiders win on 'good basketball'

The interstate rivalry between Colerain and Ryle is trending Ryle’s way after the Raiders’ second consecutive win in the series, a 63-46 conquest Thursday night in Union.

Seniors Katie Connor, Dawn Johnson and McKell Oliverio helped keep hot-shooting Ryle unbeaten as the Raiders, ranked sixth in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches’ poll, improved to 2-0.

“They shot 60 percent on 3-pointers and missed one of 17 free throws,” Colerain coach Dan Wallace said of the Raiders. “That’s good basketball.”

Ryle took control early against Colerain (1-3), ranked 10th in the Cincinnati area Division I poll, by connecting from long range. The Raiders led 21-8 after one quarter and went into halftime with a 31-21 lead.

Connor hit four 3-point baskets in the opening quarter, finished with five and scored 12 of her 15 points in the first half. Johnson had two 3-pointers and 10 points at the break, and finished with three 3s and a game-high 17 points.

“As we started banging those 3s, they started face-guarding us, and that opened up lanes for the guards to penetrate,” Johnson said.

Oliverio had eight points and junior Rachael Storer had eight rebounds for the Raiders, who hit nine 3-point shots. Connor, a first-year starter, has seven 3s in the first two games, providing Ryle with an extra dimension.

“Katie’s a great shooter,” coach Oliverio said. “When we play off the dribble, it spreads out our offense.”

Ryle’s inside-outside game forced Colerain to make tough choices while the Raiders’ defense kept the Cardinals from generating momentum.

Colerain, which lost two first-team all Greater Miami Conference players from last season’s fourth-place GMC finisher, was led by Jalan Latimer’s 15 points. Teammate Kaylee Allen added 14.

Ryle, the defending 33rd District champion and a regional semifinalist last season, saw its two returning starters inch closer to milestones.

Johnson needs less than 300 points to become the second-leading scorer in school history and 30 steals to become the all-time leader.

McKell Oliverio is looking to become the fifth Ryle player in five years to join the 1,000-point club.

The game against Colerain is part of Ryle’s larger plan to concentrate on playing out-of-area opponents during the front end of the schedule.

The Raiders play three Northern Kentucky opponents the first 10 games, and they are about to become a road show.

There is one home game between now and Jan. 5.

“We like to give our team a lot of different styles to play against because it forces us to learn to adapt,” coach Oliverio said.

Colerain (1-3) - Latimer 6 3 15, Allen 5 2 14, Elbe 1 0 3, Bolden 1 1 3, Stegmuller 1 1 3, Love 0 2 2, Merritt 1 0 2, Sherrer 1 0 2, Phillips 1 0 2. Totals 17 9 46.

Ryle (2-0) - Johnson 4 6 17, Connor 5 0 15, Menobe 3 4 10, Oliverio 3 2 8, Senvinsky 2 2 7, Storrer 1 2 4, James 1 0 2. Totals 19 16 63.

Halftime: Ryle, 31-21. 3-pointers: C 3 (Allen 2, Elbe), R 9 (Connor 5, Johnson 3, Senvinsky).

Ryle Breaks Away in Fourth Quarter

NKY Enquirer

With a tight game through three quarters, Ryle knocked down shots when it counted to pull away for a 65-49 victory over St. Henry.

Senior guard Drew Mays poured in 22 points for the Raiders, but he had plenty of help. Junior center Will Stuhr scored 15 points and senior guard Mark Fussenegger buried three of Ryle’s seven three-pointers. Tied 27-27 at halftime, Ryle scored 22 points in the fourth to put St. Henry away.

Senior guard Darius Meiman and junior forward Jordan Noble scored 11 points apiece to lead St. Henry. Ryle improved to 2-0.

After months in hospital, Abby Marsh heads home

Written by Justin B. Duke    After months in hospital, Abby Marsh heads home

UNION — Abby Marsh is finally home.

Marsh, the Ryle student who’d been hospitalized since May after a car crash, left the hospital and returned home. The crash broke her fifth cervical vertebrae and left her in spinal shock and paralyzed below her armpits. She had an 11-hour operation to fuse vertebrae together, but complications left her with a lung infection that reduced her breathing capacity and eventually collapsed her lung. This greatly impaired her speech.

Since the crash, the community rallied around Abby, swamping her with visitors and messages.

“We have a lot of friends and church family who are praying for us, and we cherish that,” said Dan Marsh, her father.

To welcome her home, more than 100 of her friends lined her street, glow sticks in hand to light her final stretch home.

“It was just an incredible outpouring of love,” Dan Marsh said.

The gesture was another in a long line of events, fundraisers and signs of support Abby’s gotten since the crash.

In August, a fundraiser at Turfway Park raised about $55,000 for Marsh’s family, and Union native Josh Hutcherson auctioned off a meal with him for five winners – raising about $12,000.

Much of that money went to remodeling the Marsh home to accommodate the 17-year-old’s wheelchair and other special needs.

“The house isn’t 100 percent, but it’s close,” Dan Marsh said.

In a symbolic gesture, a tree that was taken down as part of the remodeling was used to fuel the bonfire the Marshes had for Abby and her more than 100 friends the night she came home.

As things settle down and the renovations are completed, the Marshes’ plan to host a celebration event for everyone who’s helped with the home renovations as an opportunity to show their gratitude and for everyone to see the final product of their hard work.

Since the crash in May, Abby’s made significant progress. She can move her arms, she’s had her tracheotomy removed, she can speak, is attending church and went to the Ryle soccer banquet.

“Even with her restricted movement, she’s able to get messages out with her iPad,” Dan Marsh said.

With Abby out of the hospital, the road to recovery is far from over, and the Marshes are ready for the commitment needed. The family is taking Abby to Louisville five days a week for a two-hour therapy session. The trips are made possible because of a handicap-accessible van the family was able to buy with money from donations.

“She’s already showing signs of improvement,” Dan Marsh said.

Meeting others who are getting similar treatment has been a great source of encouragement for the family, he said.

“I know four young men who are getting out of their wheelchairs who had the same level of injury as Abby,” he said.

Regardless of how things turn out, the Marshes already have plenty to be thankful for, he said.

“It’s great to have her home,” he said.

An Evening of Culture presented by Ryle Drama

The Mineola Society for Cultural Recognition will proudly present Mr. Bill Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," starring Mildred Hayworth Carson with additional dialogue by Naomi Louise Farkle Carson (the local representative for Beauty Belle Cosmetics, which are exclusively available down at the Bee-Luv-Lee Salon in downtown Mineola). It is sure to be an evening full of wonder and merriment!

This is the long-awaited sequel to the enormously popular Faith County written by Mark Landon Smith. We’re in Mineola County again, where the Community Theatre is producing Romeo and Juliet.

Even though the cast members don’t have their lines memorized, the set isn’t finished, and a dog keeps barking offstage, they’re gonna give it a go!

There’s just an awe-inspirin’ performance given by Mildred Carson (who doesn’t look fifty) as Juliet. And there’s great chemistry between her and Bubba Bedford, who is cast as Romeo.

And lest we forget, Naomi Farkle Carson who provided the additional dialogue ...

Cross Country Teams Win Regional Runner-Up

Congratulations go out to the boys' and girls' cross country teams for earning a berth in the state championship cross country meet in Lexington.  Both teams were 2nd place in the region!

Ryle aims for home-course advantage
by Adam Turer

Ryle High School’s cross country teams hope that home-course advantage plays a factor in the upcoming regional meet.

The boys and girls will attempt to secure a place in the state meet when Ryle hosts the regional meet Nov. 3.

“Last year, Grant County hosted the regional and won,” boys head coach Benny Deaton said. “Hopefully, our runners do the same thing.”

The boys are led by seniors Michael Edwards and Dustin Mitchell and junior Parker Kay. Sophomores Matthew Uyeda and Ryan Tagher have provided a nice complement to the upperclassmen.

“We’ve had a good, gradual improvement since the beginning of the season,” Deaton said. “Hopefully, we finish on top.”

Unlike the experienced boys’ team, the girls are led by a freshman. Jensen Bales ran well during her middle school years and has quickly become the varsity’s top runner in her first season. Kayla Robinson has emerged late in the season as the team’s No. 2 runner.

“The strength of our team is we try to run in a pack,” girls head coach Jim Wihebrink said. “We really work as a team more than relying on one individual.”

The home turf should give both the boys and girls a slight edge on Saturday.

“I think it’s an advantage to a certain extent,” said Wihebrink. “Our girls practice there every day and know that course better than anybody.”

The practice strategy has changed in preparation for the higher stakes of the postseason. The boys have been steadily improving, while the girls have enjoyed a depth that allowed them to race a different lineup in each invitational during the season.

“We even out our mileage and try to improve our speed work,” said Deaton of his late-season practice plans. “I think the competition changes drastically over the course of the season.”

The stakes will be higher this weekend than at any other point this season. With a trip to state on the line, the Raiders will try to run their best race of the season.

“Everyone knows that it’s do-or-die and if you don’t run your fastest, your season will be over,” said Deaton.

State Assessment Results Released

From the KDE press release . .

FIRST RESULTS FROM UNBRIDLED LEARNING ACCOUNTABILITY MODEL RELEASED
COLLEGE/CAREER READINESS IS A BRIGHT SPOT IN DATA

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) – The first results from Kentucky’s Unbridled Learning accountability model
indicate that, in 2011-12, slightly more than 47 percent of the state’s public high school students were
prepared for college and/or careers, the Kentucky Department of Education announced today.
This is a nine-percentage-point increase from the 2010-11 school year, for which the average
college- and career-readiness rate was 38 percent.

“This increase, which translates to more than 4,500 students, is a direct result of Kentucky’s
schools’ and districts’ focus on college and career readiness,” said Kentucky Education Commissioner
Terry Holliday. “The overriding goal of the state’s public education system is to prepare students for the
paths they want to take after high school, and these data show that we are making progress toward that
goal.”

College/Career Readiness is one of five major components of the Unbridled Learning
accountability model, which was applied to test scores and other data for the first time for the 2011-12
school year. The data released today is the first from the new model and includes information about
Achievement, Gap, Growth, College/Career Readiness and Graduation Rate.

Public schools and school districts receive overall scores on a scale of 0 to 100 in the new model.
On average, the statewide school overall score was 55.2. For elementary schools, the average was 57.3;
for middle schools, 53.5; and for high schools, 54.8.

Test Scores to be Released Soon

With the passage of Senate Bill 1 in the 2009 session of the Kentucky General Assembly, the Kentucky Department of Education developed a new accountability system - the Unbridled Learning Accountability Model.  Soon we will see the data released from the first year using this new accountability model in 2011-2012.

This year the Unbridled Learning model will measure schools in 5 areas with each counting as 20% of a school's accountability score:
  • Achievement
  • Gap
  • Growth
  • College/Career Readiness
  • Graduation Rate.

Conner, Ryle cheerleaders raise awareness

Contributed by Sue Sorrell

For the past three years the Conner cheerleaders have "PINKED OUT" at an October football game to focus awareness on breast cancer.

This year, the Conner High School cheerleaders worked with the Ryle High School cheerleaders and sold sweatshirts and T-shirts with a pink ribbon and their school mascot. The cheerleaders enjoyed raising funds and raising awareness for breast cancer.

During the Conner-Ryle football game last Friday, Ryle head cheerleading coach Debbie Pyles and principal Matt Turner presented Conner head cheerleading coach Missy Bell and principal Tim Hitzfield with a check for $500 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

“We were very excited to partner with Conner High School on this project to raise money and school awareness for breast cancer. I am always impressed with the caring and compassion shown by the students in our community,” said Turner.

The Conner cheerleaders are matching that donation for breast cancer. In addition, the cheerleading squads also received a $500 check from their sweatshirt vendor, Spiritville, for a total donation of $1,500 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Both cheerleading coaches enjoyed working collaboratively and raising funds and awareness for such a worthy cause.

“It is a great honor to have the ability to bring awareness to such an important cause. We were very appreciative to have the opportunity as program to rally together with Conner Cheerleading. We look forward to making this a yearly event," Pyles said.

“I am so proud of this talented and compassionate group of young women, and their continued commitment to our community and the fight to end breast cancer, Bell said. “This was our third annual Pink Out game, and we take great pride in the growth of the program, which this year included active partnership from the Ryle High School cheerleaders. We look forward to continuing this new collaboration for many years to come and to supporting the fight to end breast cancer ... forever.”

Ryle finishes fourth in state golf tournament

by Zach Greenwell, Enquirer Contributor

BOWLING GREEN - Another year, and another move in the right direction for the Ryle boys’ golf team.

The Raiders shot a 321 team total Saturday in the final round of the Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA Boys’ Golf State Championship at Bowling Green Country Club, finishing in fourth place.

Ryle fired a two-day total of 638 and finished behind West Jessamine, St. Xavier and St. Mary. The Raiders were fifth in 2011.

“We never really got into a groove with where we wanted to be, but I think that was the story for a lot of teams,” Ryle coach Jonathan Ehlen said. “We still have improvements to make over the next couple of years, but overall a good finish.”

Ryle sophomore Logan Gamm shot a 78 on Saturday and tied for 17th individually. He was followed by sophomores Austin Squires (80) and Zach Adams (81), and junior Hunter Hughes (82).

“The guys never gave up,” Ehlen said. “There were some minor setbacks, but I’d chalk it up as a successful weekend.”

It was a storybook day for West Jessamine, as the Colts overcame a 12-stroke deficit to win their first team title, and junior Fred Allen Meyer claimed the individual crown with a playoff win over St. Mary’s Joey Mayo.

“For our team to come back like that is pretty unbelievable,” Meyer said. “We’ve known we could do it all year, but this is the first time we’ve played our best game.”

West Jessamine shot an even-par 288 on Saturday for a two-stroke win over St. Xavier, which was denied its 19th championship despite a 12-shot lead coming into the day.

Meyer carded a 2-under 70 to tie Mayo with a 141 total. His birdie putt on the 18th hole forced the playoff and sealed West Jessamine’s team win.

Meyer bogeyed the pair’s second playoff hole, while Mayo settled for a double bogey after hitting his drive wide left.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet I guess, but it’s very exciting,” Meyer said. “We pushed each other.”

Dixie Heights senior Blake Adkins tied for 17th as an individual with a 75 on Saturday. Playing in his first state tournament since his freshman year, Adkins improved on a first-round 79 that faded down the stretch.

“I tightened it up on the back nine today,” Adkins said. “Everything was just a little bit better. It’s been a great experience.”

Newport Central Catholic senior Colin DuPont shot an 81 and tied for 42nd.

Covington Catholic junior Brett Bauereis shot a 77 on the first day, but tied for 57th after an 87 in the final round.

Ryle finishes fourth in state golf tournament

Raider volleyball serving up wins

by James Weber, Enquirer Contributor

UNION — After a productive end to the regular season, the Ryle High School volleyball team was hoping for some productive rest as the Raiders had a week off from competition.

Ryle enters the 33rd District Tournament with a 24-7 record. Ryle is set to play a semifinal match Tuesday, Oct. 9, and with a win would advance to the district final Oct. 10 and the Ninth Region Tournament the week of Oct. 15.

“We have had a really good season,” said head coach Tasha Lovins. “In some of our losses we played real well and there are a couple we would like to have back. We’ve had some tough matches and we’re looking to get some rest and recuperation.”

Ryle got a late-season boost by winning the Jefferson County Invitational in Louisville for the first time, then the Raiders ended the regular season by beating Newport Central Catholic. In between, the Raiders had a 3-1 loss to Notre Dame.

The Raider roadblock continues to be state powers Notre Dame and St. Henry, the perennial favorites to win the Ninth Region. Ryle has lost to both teams this year, 3-1, taking set two from both teams in the process. Against Notre Dame Oct. 2, Ryle lost set four in extra points, 28-26, to end the match. Otherwise, Ryle is unbeaten against Northern Kentucky competition and has three other losses to instate schools.

“We played well against Notre Dame and St. Henry and we learned a lot,” Lovins said. “We play well offensively and it’s dispersed throughout the team. Not one person led by a lot in kills. When we play our best, we have ball control and we’re able to spread the ball to all our hitters.”

Seniors have led the way in Paige Doellman, Ashlee Howe, Kaylee Keohane and Heather Torline. Sophomore Ashley Bush has been racking up both kills and assists lately, playing setter or hitter depending on where she is aligned in the rotation. Junior Alexa Nichols had a strong week at the net to end the regular season. Juniors Harper Hempel and Alexis DeLaGarza are experienced starters.

The Raiders will have plenty of practice to shore up things before the postseason starts.

“We have to play to win,” Lovins said. “Sometimes we get complacent and we have to serve aggressively and be able to pass well next week.”

Ryle sophomore returns to state golf tourney

by James Weber
Union Recorder article link

Nadine Innes is accomplished enough that she doesn’t need much coaching during a round of golf.

Because of that, Ryle head girls golf coach Jeremy Thornton didn’t see many of her 79 strokes during the Region 6 championships Sept. 24 at Kenton County Golf Course (Pioneer) as he focused on her Ryle teammates. But he knows what his star sophomore can do.

“She’s mature enough that I let her play at a distance and not get in her way too much,” Thornton said. “She has worked really hard to get her game to this point. She’s had a really good season. When she feels in control of her game, there’s no number that’s too low for her to put up.”

Innes finished second individually in the tournament with that 79 and she will go to the state tourney Oct. 2-3 in Bowling Green for the second straight year. Innes tied for 15th at state last year with former teammate and 2012 Ryle graduate Alex Bruce.

“I was nervous whether I would make it or not,” she said. “I feel like where you place doesn’t matter, it only matters how you played. The greens (in Bowling Green) are definitely fast and you have to hit it straight. Hopefully I’ll be all right.”

Innes was one shot behind individual champ Shelby Power of Owen County. Innes and the Raiders finished fourth in the team standings. Kayley Hughes and Mollie Collins shot 95’s. Morgan Clark had 98 and Savanna Innes 116.

The course was lengthened for the regional with different tee boxes and a lot of the cups were placed in hard-to-reach spots on the green.

“When you lengthen it out and put the pins in tough places, it shows the course has some teeth,” Thornton said. “For any girl to come out here today and shoot in the 70’s was a tough task. When they look back on it they’ll understand how tough it was.”

Cooper finished seventh in girls, led by a 92 from Madison Smith.

The Ryle boys team will go to state once again, although it lost a tough battle with Covington Catholic for the boys Region 7 title Sept. 25 at Boone Links. Ryle shot 312 to finish three shots behind the Colonels.

Paul Clancy and Logan Gamm shot 75 to tie for second in the individual standings. Hiunter Hughes shot 80, Austin Squires 82 and Zach Adams 84. Ryle finished fifth at state last year and will look to build on that.

Cooper finished third with 331. Zach McNeil shot an 80 to grab eighth place overall and claim an individual spot to the state tournament. Walton-Verona’s Jacob Poore shot 79 to earn a state berth, helping the Bearcats finish fourth overall.

McNeil, who played for Walton last year, lost in a playoff last year to decide the individual berths to state after bogeying 17 and 18 in regulation. This year, he took a double bogey on 17 but rebounded with a par on 18 which made the difference.

“It went through my head the last couple of holes,” he said. “I bogeyed the last two holes last year to go to the playoff, so finishing is a key thing you have to do. It worked out this year. I knew on 17 there was one guy at 79 and that was what I was shooting for. I didn’t know if anyone else would get under 80. On 18, I missed a 12-foot birdie putt and I tapped in for par.”

McNeil becomes the third Jaguar to play in the state tournament.

“He played well today and grinded it out. It was solid play all day,” said Cooper head coach Terry Trame. “He didn’t have any fantastic holes or any bad holes, and that’s what it takes to get down as an individual because the best two teams go down and it’s usually Ryle and Cov Cath, so these kids know they’re playing for three spots.”

Cooper’s Rhett Pluimer (82) and Collin Smith (83) came close to going to state, as did Walton’s Preston Knibbe (82).

Conner finished fifth, led by Jake Cahill’s 83. St. Henry was seventh and Boone County eighth.

Innes, Edgington reach final round

BOWLING GREEN - Ryle's Nadine Innes and Notre Dame Academy's Jill Edgington earned second opportunities Wednesday, and neither disappointed.

The local pair slipped into the final round of the Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA Girls' Golf State Championship right on the cut line, but both bettered their standing with improved rounds at Bowling Green Country Club.

The cut was set Wednesday morning at 85 after four groups of individuals finished their first rounds. Innes and Edgington, each in individual contention after their teams were eliminated Tuesday, shot 85s in the first round and were among the last players to advance.

"The chance to come back was great," said the junior Edgington, who paced near the clubhouse in the early morning as the cut was finalized. "It was right on the edge for a while. Some guy said it was 84, and then it was 86, so we were a little nervous this morning. It was great to get back out there and hope for the best."

Innes, a sophomore, was one of the players that had to return to the course to finish the final hole of her first round. She made par to sneak into the cut, then bounced back by firing a 77 in the final round to tie for 25th, including a 1-over-par performance on her final nine holes.

"It was a little nerve-wracking, but we made it, so I was very thankful," Innes said. "I bounced back a little bit. I felt like my driver was a lot better than yesterday, and my putter picked up."

Edgington, who finished eighth in 2011, shot an 80 in the final round to tie for 34th.

"I know our young players weren’t happy with how they played yesterday, but I think next year will be a lot better," Edgington said. "Once you’ve seen the course, you kind of know how to play it. We’re excited for the opportunity to come back."

Sacred Heart won the team competition with a total of 636, beating second-place Calloway County by 22 strokes.

Calloway County sophomore Anna Hack won the individual title with a 74 in the final round for a two-day total of 142, staving off North Hardin senior Lydia Gumm, who finished four strokes back.

"It feels great to come in here and win it after Emma," said Hack, referencing three-time champion and 2011 winner Emma Talley, now playing at the University of Alabama. "She was my role model. She taught me if you practice hard enough, you can succeed."

Notre Dame senior Sydney Swingos, who shot an 83 in the first round, tied for 40th on Wednesday with a second-round 87.

Grant County senior Sarah Kellam shot an 89 in the final round and tied for 44th.

Ryle blanks Boone County, 14-0

by Marc Harden, NKY Enquirer             Ryle blanks Boone County, 14-0

The fierce football rivalry between Boone County and Ryle resumed Friday at Owen Hauck Stadium in Florence and both teams had similar agendas: Get a win and stay in contention in the Class 6A district race following a slow start to the season.

On a night when long gainers were hard to come by, it was Ryle that received the biggest boost from big plays during a 14-0 victory over the Rebels.

"So glad we got the win," said Raiders running back Tanner Pulice, who accounted for 167 total yards. "I thought our defense played great."

After being shut out twice, Ryle recorded its first shutout of the season while limiting the Rebels to 65 total yards.

"We got a ton of three-and-outs," Pulice said. "And we got the scores."

The Raiders hit paydirt on their first possession when Pulice scooted into the end zone on a five-yard run around left end, capping a 42-yard drive set up by Pulice's 54-yard opening kickoff return.

"Tanner's a workhorse," Ryle coach Bryson Warner said of the senior, who rushed 34 times for 113 yards. "And I thought our special teams did a really good job."

Ryle made it 14-0 when track speedster Nick Kennedy fielded a punt and returned it 89 yards for a score with 11 seconds left in the first half. Kennedy, a top-10 finisher in the 100 meters at last year's Class 3A state track and field meet, broke two tackles at the Boone 25 and outran the defense for the touchdown.

Both teams wanted momentum as they head into the back half of the schedule, and Ryle got it. The Raiders (3-3) are ranked seventh in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll. The unranked Rebels (1-6) won for the first time last week after losing their first five.

"There were a lot of five-yard penalties and dropped passes," Boone coach Rick Thompson said as he characterized the play of his offense. Rebels quarterbacks finished 1-for-10 passing for seven yards. Boone's vaunted rushing attack was held to 58 on 1.8 yards per carry.

Ryle beat Boone for the fourth year in a row and tied the Rebels in the District 6 standings, at 1-1. The Raiders were in control from the start, outgaining Boone 100 yards to 26 in the first half. Ryle totaled 149 yards in the game, all of it on the ground as Raiders quarterback Jake Ashley, subbing for starter Nathan Davis, threw four incompletions.

Boone did not advance deep into Ryle territory until late in the third quarter when Dre Nolan recovered a fumbled punt return at the Raiders' 23. But the Rebels went backward, losing two yards on the possession. The big defensive play came from end Alex Brownell, who pressured quarterback Jesse Schulze into a misfire on second down. Brownell finished with five tackles, two for losses. Daniel Osbourne led Ryle with seven tackles.

Schulze rotated with Blake Ingolia at quarterback for Boone until Ingolia left the game early in the third after receiving a hard hit and struggling to the sideline with the help of a coach.

Following Boone's ill-fated attempt to get in the end zone, Ryle took over at its own 21 with 1:46 to go in the third. The Raiders were forced to punt, putting the ball near midfield and giving the Rebels another chance to pull within a touchdown. But the Raiders snuffed the drive before Boone reached the 50.

Austin Merchant - 2013 National Merit Semifinalist

Congratulations to Ryle senior Austin Merchant for being named a 2013 National Merit Semifinalist. Austin currently attends class at WKU's Gatton Academy in Bowling Green, KY.

Seven Gatton Academy seniors have been recognized as semifinalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program, an honor which potentially opens the door to college scholarship opportunities.

Over 1.5 million students entered the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Students are tested in math, critical reasoning, and writing. The 16,000 Semifinalists honored are the highest-scoring entrants in their state and represent less than one percent of each state’s high school seniors.

Since the Gatton Academy’s inception in 2007, the Gatton Academy has seen 52 students named as National Merit Semifinalists.

For these Gatton Academy seniors, it’s a great way to begin their final year of high school even as they focus on the college admissions process ahead. According to Gatton Academy Director Dr. Tim Gott, this is just the beginning of a busy—and rewarding—year.

“With this recognition, these students have earned a key that will open tremendous educational opportunities,” Gott said. “We look forward to seeing what these students will accomplish in the days ahead.”

To be considered in the rigorous competition for National Merit Scholarships, Semifinalists must advance to the Finalist level of the competition by meeting additional standard and fulfilling several requirements. These include having a record of very high academic performance of college preparatory course work, submitting SAT scores that confirm PSAT performance, and being fully endorsed and recommended by a high school official.

Since students take the qualifying PSAT exam in October of their junior year of high school, much of the preparation stems from learning opportunities during their freshman and sophomore years of high school. The Gatton Academy builds on those experiences to provide students with a robust application and preparation for the SAT, a critical component in becoming a finalist.

“It is an incredible honor to be named a National Merit Semifinalist,” Gott said. “These students have demonstrated a level of excellence that very few can claim. All of us, the Gatton staff and the schools they represent back home, value the opportunity to have worked with such outstanding young people.”
2013 Gatton Academy National Merit Semifinalists:

Ryle 21 - DeSales 10

By: Dan Clasgens

The Ryle Raiders hadn’t played since Aug. 30 and the extra time to regroup paid big dividends as they traveled to Columbus to take down the DeSales Stallions, 21-10.

Ryle (2-2) had only managed to score 55 points per through three contests, but the ground game got going in this one to help them prevail.

Defense was the story early as both teams struggled to move the chains during the first half as DeSales (1-3) went to the locker room with a 3-0 halftime lead.

The Raiders would go ahead 7-3 with a third-quarter 1-yard touchdown run by Alex Brownwell. The lead would not last long though as the Stallions as the Stallions matched them with a 1-yard TD run to close out the third quarter.

On this night Ryle would save the best for last as they scored 14 unanswered points in the game’s final frame.

Senior defensive back Daniel Osborne started the fireworks with a 20-yard fumble recovery in the quarter’s opening minutes to give the Raiders the lead for good at 14-10. Classmate Travis Pulice sealed the deal with a 1-yard TD run, his first of the season, later in the frame.

After back-to-back games against opponents from the Buckeye State the Raiders return home to Borland Stadium next week as they open district play by hosting Simon Kenton (4-0).
