Ryle powers past Boone in 33rd final

By Dan Wright

UNION, Ky. - Ryle senior Bobby Stauffer is not someone who is known to be at a loss for words on the basketball court.

But after leading the Raiders to a physical, 46-41, win against Boone County in the 33rd District championship game at Cooper High School in Union, the Raiders’ active, 6-foot-7 center struggled to explain the feeling of being named the tournament’s most valuable player.

“It’s a good feeling, but I wouldn’t have got here without my team,” said Stauffer who led all scorers with 17 points despite knocking knees with a Boone County player late in the first quarter. “I don’t know what to say, I’m ecstatic.”

Stauffer also grabbed eight rebounds, but it was his play on defense that make just as much of a difference in the game, according to Ryle head Alan Mullins.

“We switched off Bobby in the third quarter onto Trevan (Brown) so he could use his feet and use his quickness,” Mullins said. “He prevented several balls from getting in there that earlier in the game Trevan was catching and getting shots. That was a huge factor for us. It got the tide turned for us, and got them out of rhythm on their offense.”

Neither team led by more than four points in the first half, but Brown, Boone County’s six-foot-five leading scorer, scored 10 points in the third quarter to help Boone County open up the largest lead of the game by either team, six points at 36-30, with 1:30 remaining in the quarter.

With Stauffer focusing his attention on him in the fourth quarter, however, Brown was held scoreless and the Rebels managed just two field goals over the final nine minutes of the game.

“He’s a big boy, but we started moving our feet around him, taking some of their passes away and then they’d throw it and we’d get easy steals,” Stauffer said. “Then they’d have to lob it and we’d have the help side defense. When he caught it we knew if we just got straight up and down in front of him, he’d be more likely to miss.”

Stauffer also came up with the key offensive play of the game, tying the score at 36 with a steal and fast break dunk over a Boone County defender with 6:40 remaining.

“That was just huge, it was monster,” said Mullins. “It did so much for our crowd and our team. I thought that made the difference in the ballgame when he completed that play. It energized everybody on the floor. It gave our five guys who were on the floor a little extra ounce of energy to get through those last couple of minutes of the ball game.”

Raiders Repeat as 33rd District Champions!

NKy Sports Blog: 33rd District Notebook: Raiders Repeat

Posted by Rick Broering

"The Ryle Raiders were able to capture their second 33rd District title win over Boone County in a row Thursday night as they held off the Rebels 46-41 at Cooper High School.

As expected in a rivalry matchup with a district championship on the line, the game got off to a slow start with both teams coming out with a lot of adrenaline. The high intensity and emotional start benefited the defense a whole lot more than the offense.

Finals MVP - Bobby Stauffer
The result was the fans in attendance getting the privilege of watching the greatest 4:00 minutes of defense in Northern Kentucky basketball history. Midway through the first quarter the score was 4-2 in favor of Boone.

Despite relying on their zone defense most of the season, Boone came out in a man-to-man defense and did a good job to start. As the game wore on though, Tate Mullins was able to break his defenders down off of the dribble and found some success scoring the ball.

On the offensive end Boone was relying on their guards penetrating and creating instead of pounding the ball into standout post player Trevan Brown. Brown did get 6 points in the first quarter off of second chance buckets though. After the first 8:00 were over, Ryle led 12-10."

Study: Boone schools’ return on investment high

By Justin B. Duke • jbduke@nky.com

A national group has found a high return on investment in education in Boone County.

A report released by the Center for American Progress studied the productivity of school districts across the country based on “how much learning a district produces for every dollar spent.”

The report named both of Boone County’s school districts to its best rating calling the districts a high return on investment of taxpayer money.

According to the report Boone County Schools spends $5,817 per pupil and has a state achievement index of 70. Walton-Verona Schools spends $6,042 per pupil and has a state achievement index of 74.

Boone County’s districts compare well against Kentucky district’s on the other end of the spectrum like Owsley County Schools that spends $10,956 per pupil and has a state achievement index of 47.

The report validates what the Boone County Schools Board of Education has been saying for a long time, said Superintendent Randy Poe.

“We’ve been doing more with less,” Poe said.

Poe credits teachers, students, business partners and community leaders for helping the district succeed even when funding isn’t as high as other places in the state.

Ruschell adds state title to wrestling family

By James Weber • jweber@nky.com

T.J. Ruschell was in his fourth grade when he watched his brother Kyle win the first of his two state wrestling championships in 2004.

The younger brother, like Kyle, won his first title in his junior year Feb. 19 at the Kentucky state meet in Frankfort.

T.J. Ruschell, a Ryle High School junior, beat Sean Fausz of Campbell County by pin in the third period to win the state title at 119 pounds. Ruschell led 8-2 when he ended the match, and had a 55-3 record.

Ryle's T.J. Ruschell won the Kentucky state championship match at 110 pounds Feb. 19 at Frankfort Convention Center. Ruschell won the match for his first state title.
“It’s been my goal ever since my brother won,” said Ruschell, who beat Fausz for the fourth time this year. “I know (Fausz) is watching tape on me and I’m watching tape on him. He’s gotten closer every time we’ve wrestled, and I’m glad I won.”
Ruschell, ranked third in the state going into the tourney, won three of his matches by pin and another by a 15-0 count. He beat the top two wrestlers in the state before getting to the final, including Will Bryant of Lafayette, 14-8. Bryant was ranked second.

“I knew I could beat them both. I knew it was going to be tough but I could do it,” Ruschell said. “I wrestled (Bryant) this year and lost to him in overtime. I got turned on my back but this time I was looking forward to it and fought it off.”

Wrestling is king in the Ruschell family. Father, Tim, has been head coach for his sons, including Keith, currently Ryle’s middle-school coach. Kyle completed a standout career at Wisconsin and is trying for the Olympics in 2012. Kyle, a two-time state champ and most outstanding wrestler at state in 2005, was at this year’s state meet helping T.J.

“(Keith) was my middle school coach and I couldn’t have done it without my brothers and my dad,” T.J. said. “Having Kyle here this week really helped me a lot.”

Said Tim: “I’m proud of him. Having a brother who has done what Kyle has doesn’t make it easier for him, but he got the monkey off his back and he did a great job.”

Ryle finished third overall in the state with 152 points, and had eight medalists, one off last year’s team record.

Connor Coyle (160) and Court Mace (171) finished third. Coach Ruschell was proud of the way they shook off tough losses that ended their state title hopes.

Mace lost 6-2 to eventual champ J.J. Jude of Johnson Central in a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal, which sent Mace to the hospital with a minor neck injury.

“My semifinal match didn’t go the way I wanted to, but I feel I wrestled well,” Mace said. “You have to keep your head up. You can’t mope around all day, you got to move on and keep wrestling, and that’s what I did.”

Gus Adams was fourth at 112. Caleb Lonkard was sixth at 145. Dallas Pruett (103), Corey Ahern (130) and Josh Parker (152) all finished seventh.

Six of Ryle’s state qualifiers are seniors, but the Raiders junior varsity had a strong season and the middle school team won the state title.

“We didn’t do what we came here to do, which was win a state championship, but I’m real proud to be on this team,” Mace said. “We’re such a close team and we love each other to death. I’m proud of every wrestler on this team and how hard we worked.”

Cheesman leads Ryle to rout of Cooper

By Sam Elliott
UNION, Ky. - Ashley Cheesman scored a game-high 19 points off the bench and Ryle’s defense never allowed more than eight points in a quarter Tuesday as the Raiders cruised to a 64-25 win against Cooper on the Jaguars’ home court in the semifinals of the 33rd District tournament.

“We just came out tonight talking about, from the get-go, that it’s just all about energy,” said Ryle head coach Patti Oliverio. “That’s what we feed off of. We talked about in tournament time it’s all about energy, defense and rebounding.”

The Raiders forced 10 Cooper turnovers in the first quarter alone, including a pair of 10-second violations within the first 90 seconds, while junior forward Jenna Crittendon blocked two shots in the opening minute.

“When we play with energy and we play together as a team, we’re a very good basketball team,” Oliverio said. “That was our focus tonight, just coming out defensively and setting the tone.”

Offensively, Ryle began with an 11-0 run before Andrea Thompson’s 3-pointer put the Jaguars on the board after nearly five minutes.

Cheesman entered the game with 5:18 remaining in the first quarter and made two 3-pointers in just more than two minutes. Her jumper in the quarter’s final seconds gave the Raiders a 22-6 lead after the opening eight minutes.

“[Oliverio] told me to go in, look for my shot, play defense and do anything my team needed me to do,” Cheesman said.

The junior guard began the second quarter with another 3-pointer and added one more with just five seconds remaining before halftime. She scored all 19 of her points before the break, all the while still fighting off a lingering illness.

Ryle clobbers Campbell in finale

Raiders scored first 16 points

By Dan Wright

ALEXANDRIA, Ky. - The Ryle Raiders made their final statement of the regular season an emphatic one, serving notice to all in the 9th Region with a 75-40 throttling of a 20-win Campbell County team in both teams’ regular-season finale Friday night.

The next game for both teams will be Tuesday in their district tournaments, with Ryle facing Cooper and Campbell County playing the winner of Monday’s Calvary Christian-Silver Grove game.

“We did what we do best, and that’s run and play good aggressive defense and let our athleticism take over,” said head coach Patti Oliverio. “We played really well as a team tonight. We got all five players involved. Any time we can put five players on the court who can score, who can do a lot of things with the basketball, when we get all five people involved in the offense, we are pretty hard to guard.”

The Raiders were equally tough on the defensive end, where their pressure caused Campbell County to turn the ball over seven times in its first 13 possessions, leading to a 16-0 run by the Raiders to open the game.

No. 1 Ryle pulls out win

Raiders top No. 4 Notre Dame Academy 60-56

Written by Marc Hardin, Enquirer contributor

The Ryle and Notre Dame Academy girls' basketball teams gave each other what they wanted Tuesday, a late-season test against a ranked opponent a week before district tournaments begin.

"A game like this against a good team does a nice job preparing you (for the postseason)," Ryle coach Patti Oliverio said. "But you always want that momentum."

The visiting Raiders kept momentum with a hard-fought 60-56 victory, their eighth win in nine games.

Ryle, the top-ranked team in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, has won 15 of its last 17. But the Raiders (21-5) needed to hold off the No. 4 Pandas (16-8).

Abby Jump led Ryle with 15 points and Ashley Cheesman had 14. Defensive stopper Jenna Crittendon added 12 despite foul trouble.

Scheduling Requests for 2011-12

When making your schedule request for 2011-12 and considering your class choices for the next few years, here is some research from the US Department of Education to consider:

The best predictor of college graduation, based on the records of students, is NOT good high school grades NOR good test scores, but the best predictor is . . .

the number of challenging courses taken in high school.

A student who works hard and struggles in an AP or IB course is better prepared for college than a student who takes an easier course and/or test.

Scheduling Conferences for 2011-12

Scheduling Conferences for students in grades 9-11 have been scheduled for Monday, February 21, 2011 from 1-8 pm.

If you have a specific date and time request for your meeting please contact your student’s mentoring teacher by Friday. Each student has been given a card with a specific time and room location.  Otherwise you should be contacted by email, note, or telephone with a scheduled date and time by the mentoring teacher.

Group sessions for incoming 8th grade students will be held in the Ryle auditorium on February 21, 2011 from 5-8 p.m. Students with last names A – L will meet from 5-6:30 p.m.; students with last names M – Z will meet from 6:30-8 p.m.

If you have questions please call the school office at 384-5300.

Using PLAN/ACT Scores for Scheduling Requests

The ACT Corporation has published some very interesting research connecting student's PLAN test scores and their success on Advanced Placement exams later in their high school career.

The PLAN test is taken by all sophomore students and is essentially a shorter version, based on fewer standards, than the ACT test. The ACT test will be taken by all junior students at Ryle on March 15th.

The ACT's research lists PLAN test scores that yield a probability of success on certain AP exams. This information could certainly be used to confirm thinking that a student should take an AP course and exam and could also be used to spur a student to work harder and smarter if their PLAN scores indicate they may not score as high as they wish on the AP exams. This is especially important to consider when completing schedule requests for 2010-11.

Boone Schools explains $19.2 million balance

By Justin B. Duke • jbduke@nky.com

With legislators eyeing Boone County Schools’ fund balance, the district decided to show where the money is going.

At the recommendation of the Kentucky School Boards Association, Treasurer Linda Schild gave a report of the district’s fund balance.

There have been talks of the Kentucky Board of Education beginning to manage districts’ fund balances, and that would hurt Boone County Schools, Schild said.

“They want to take control of how we spend this money,” she said.

The district currently has a fund balance of $19.2 million. The number can sound large until seeing where the money goes, Schild said.

About $4.2 million of that is designated for school openings and close to $684,000 of that is site based decision making council money that the district is not allowed to spend.

The biggest use of the fund is covering expenses during the summer before property tax bills are sent out, Schild said.

“We have to make sure we make the payroll in the summer and make the mortgage payments,” she said.

From July to September last year, the district had $15.4 million in expenses that were covered by the fund balance because little revenue comes in during that period, Schild said.

Those expenses include utility bills, security and debt repayment.

While trying to cover those expenses, the district also tries to keep a contingency fund between 2 and 5 percent – $3.35 million to $8.36 million, Schild said.

“There isn’t just $19 million out there unaccounted for,” said Superintendent Randy Poe.

With the money being used throughout the year, it’s ironic that leaders who can’t balance a state budget want to try to handle the local school districts’ budgets, said board chairman Steve Kinman.

“It blows me away,” Kinman said.

Ryle wins seventh straight regional title

Written by Richard Skinner, Enquirer contributor

It may not have quite the tradition of Notre Dame breaking out the green jerseys for special games, but when Ryle wrestling coach Tim Ruschell decided to return the white singlet to his team for Saturday's Region 6 championship round matches it had a similar positive motivating effect.
Regional Champs!

Ryle wound up with seven individual champions and 13 state qualifiers in rolling to its seventh straight Region 6 team title by an almost 82-point margin over runner-up Campbell County at Walton-Verona High School.

The Raiders lost use of the white singlet after what Ruschell described was a disappointing performance in the finals of the GMVWA Tournament in Fairborn, Ohio, Dec 28-29. His initial threat was he wasn't going to give them back the rest of the season.

The way his team wrestled in Friday's first two rounds helped him change his mind on Saturday.

"I opened up the bag that had them in it and said, 'You guys have earned it,' '' said Ruschell. "I don't think they were expecting that and you should have seen them - especially our seniors - fighting over them. It's nice to see it means so much just to put on a singlet. Half of it was mind control games. This sport is so mental anyway you try to find anything you can as a motivator."
Junior T.J. Ruschell, the coach's son who won the individual championship at 119 pounds for his third straight regional title, admitted simply getting the white singlet's back provided a little inspiration for him and his teammates.

"We were all excited; we always get excited to get to wear the white ones," said T.J. Ruschell. "We didn't deserve to wear them again until today and we wore them proudly."

In addition to T.J. Ruschell, also winning individual titles for Ryle were seniors Caleb Lonkard at 145, Josh Parker at 152, Connor Coyle at 160, Court Mace at 171, Taylor Pruett at 189 and sophomore Gus Adams at 112 . It was Coyle's second straight regional title after he won at 152 last season.

Ryle stuns top-ranked Boone

Raiders avenge postseason loss
By Terry Boehmker

UNION, Ky. - Ryle girls’ basketball coach Patti Oliverio is glad her players never learned to put the past behind them.

Motivated by the memory of a heartbreaking loss in last year’s post-season playoffs, the Raiders upset Boone County, 60-50, in front of more than 2,500 fans on Friday at Ryle.

It was Boone County, the top-ranked team in this week’s Northern Kentucky girls’ coaches poll, that edged Ryle, 32-30, in last year’s 9th Region championship game.

“You know, they’ve been talking about that (loss) since Day One of practice,” Oliverio said of her players. “That’s kind of been their motivation. When they’re dragging a little bit in practice someone will say ‘32-30’ and it kind of gets them going again.”

The Raiders won Friday’s game with an offensive strategy that has carried them to the No. 2 ranking in the local coaches’ poll. They spread the floor and attacked the basket so well that four players scored in double figures.

The team leaders were junior guard Ashley Cheesman and junior forward Jenna Crittendon with 17 points each.

Ryle breaks Boone hex

By Marc Hardin • Enquirer contributor • February 1, 2011

Seeding for the 33rd District boys' basketball tournament was established last week so Tuesday's showdown between district rivals Ryle and visiting Boone County was played for pride and the opportunity to build momentum. Score the latest round in favor of the Raiders, who avenged a season-opening loss to the Rebels with a 51-47 come-from-behind victory.

Ryle, the No. 2 seed, improved to 14-10 and won its fourth straight game. Boone County, seeded No. 1, dropped to 15-7.

Guard Zach Perkins drilled four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 18 points while center Bobby Stauffer added 15 for Ryle.

"It's Boone County, a big rival. The kids get up for playing them no matter what," Ryle coach Alan Mullins said. "I thought we played good defense tonight. Todd Vollet is one of the best interior defenders up here and we relied on him so much."

Ryle wrestlers ready to take shot at state

By Marc Hardin • Enquirer contributor • January 31, 2011

The Ryle wrestling team is poised for another successful state tournament run after placing third at the state duals on Saturday at Henry Clay High School.
The Raiders lost 31-29 in the semifinals to Louisville Trinity, which lost to LaRue County in the finals.

"We could have won," Raiders coach Tim Ruschell said. "Trinity won seven matches and we won seven. But our heavyweight had their heavyweight in a pin and lost the hold a second before he got it, and that would have been a big points swing. The LaRue County coach, Gary Canter, said he wanted no part of us in the final because of the matchups and was happy to get Trinity."

Ryle's T.J. Ruschell, Court Mace and Connor Coyle, who committed last week to the United States Navy Academy, went undefeated during the duals, each posting 5-0 records. Ryle heavyweight Jason Maine, who is known as "Gerber Baby" because of his facial resemblance to the image on the baby food containers, went 4-1.
