Governor's School for Entrepreneurs

A NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS - SUMMER 2013

What:  A hands-on, experiential immersion into innovation and entrepreneurship.  This is a three-week residential summer program where students, working in teams, will take an idea and utilize science, technology, engineering, art, math and business skills to turn it into a product/service and develop a business model around it. GSE is a unique entrepreneurship program which places a strong emphasis on innovation and design as elements of creating a sustainable business model.  GSE will teach students critical life and work skills of problem-solving, teamwork, iteration and social responsibility.

Open to current 9th, 10th and 11th graders.

Activities at GSE will include:
·  learning and applying concepts to the teams’  business ideas
·  visiting startup businesses in the community, talking to the founder and seeing entrepreneurial processes in action
·  hands-on, interactive sessions with entrepreneurial leaders
·  creative sessions with professional designers and engineers
·  team building exercises and recreational games

When:  June 9-29, 2013

Where:  Georgetown College

Application informationAvailable online by December 20, due by January 31, 2013.
Admission to the program is through a competitive application process.  Grade point average is not a criteria for selection.  Students will be selected based upon 1) their ability to thrive in a creative and innovative environment, 2) the quality and individuality of their application, and 3) their ability to work on a team.  Approximately 50 students will be selected to attend the first summer.  Students may apply as a team.
The application will consist of three parts:
· an online written application
· a 2-minute video pitching either your business idea or your interest in being on a team
· two teacher/leader recommendations

How schools can help:
  • Encourage students to apply.  GSE is seeking creative thinkers and leaders interested in technology & business.
  • Encourage students from underrepresented groups to apply.
  • Provide technology resources and assistance with creation of the 2-minute video application if needed.

We welcome the chance to come to your school and talk to students about the program. Contact: Shari Ball sball@kstc.com or 859-246-3233 to schedule a visit.
