Responsible Young Driver (RYD) Program

A few weeks ago we held our spring session of the Responsible Young Driver (RYD) Program at Ryle.  Each semester we invite our students turning 16 years old to a birthday party during which we invite a guest speaker to discuss the dangers of driving and the importance of making smart choices.  Afterwards we enjoy some refreshments and spend a few minutes relaxing.

In our future versions of RYD we must remember to include using cell phones in automobiles.  It's not a great leap of logic to know that texting or talking on a cell phone while driving is dangerous.

What many people may not know is that texting while driving is more dangerous than driving under the influence of alcohol or marijuana, according to a study by the Transport Research Laboratory.  The study results found, for those texting and driving, reaction times were 35% slower, increasing the likelihood of an accident.  By comparison, alcohol consumption to the legal limit has reaction times that were 12% slower.  Marijuana slowed reaction times by 21%.

Here's a few other interesting pieces of data . . .
  • Those who use cell phones while driving are 4 times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves according to the National Highway Safety Administration.
  • Driving while using a cell phone reduces by 37% the amount of brain activity associated with driving, cited in a study from Carnegie Mellon University.
  • The #1 source of driver inattention, according to a study by Virginia Tech and the NHTSA, is use of a wireless device.
  • Texting while driving driving is illegal in numerous states and nearly all have legislation proposed or pending to make it illegal.
However, the most compelling argument may be that we all need to set the example for the future young drivers sitting in our cars.

Legislative Update on the 2010-12 State Budget

On March 22, the Senate sent an amended version of the 2010-12 state budget back to the House. The Senate version added the two instructional days back to the budget, but did not fund them and made additional cuts to SEEK as well as other P-12 line items. The House bill represents a $55 million reduction for education; the Senate bill cuts funding to schools about twice as much. To see details go to www.prichblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/senate-budget-requires-two.html.

The budget will now go back to the House for a vote. The House will probably vote against the changes, which will result in a conference committee where the budget will be negotiated.

Please call or email your legislators and the House and Senate leadership and ask them to fully fund education.

It’s easy to do. You can email your legislator or call the Legislative Message Line at (800) 372-7181 and leave a message. Ask to leave the same message for the members of the Senate leadership and the House leadership. Say something like:  “Please invest in our state’s future by fully funding education.”

Maintaining the quality educational programs that we have at Ryle will be difficult if we do not provide adequate funding.

ACT Today

The juniors completed the ACT this morning and by all accounts did an excellent job.  I am confident that their scores will reflect the time and effort given by both students and staff.   Overall, this group of juniors did a great job, they worked extremely hard and used their time wisely.  Nearly everyone was exhausted from this test which takes over 3 hours to complete.

Each student should receive their scores by mail within 3-6 weeks of ACT receiving the test booklets.
