All-State Winners in Music

We are very proud to have several students named All-State performers by the Ky Music Educators Association (KMEA).  Additionally, the Ryle Honors Wind Symphony has been invited to perform as a group at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 4th  at the KMEA Conference in Louisville, KY.  This is a distinct honor as only a few groups from the state are invited to perform each year.

Erin Deja, Kelly Tursic, and Stephanie Church were named to the All-State Concert Band.

Desirae Carron was named to the All-State Symphonic Band.

Amy Albright and Kaitlyn Kelly were named to the All-State Chorus.

Run for Your Life

OK, not everybody is a runner.  But most people can walk pretty fast or do other weight-bearing excercise to strengthen bones, tendons, and muscles.  Those who do it have a longer, more enjoyable life.

A new study by Stanford University followed middle aged males beginning in the 1980's.  One group of men in the study were runners and the others were not.  Over time, there were just half as many deaths from all causes among the runners versus the nonrunners.  Even more significantly, disabilities in the runners occurred 12 to 16 years later than in nonrunners.  Doctors at Stanford were surprised by the longevity effect and especially surprised by the quality of life the runners experienced.

At the time the project began, those who opposed it predicted the men who ran everyday would suffer serious injuries and many would require knee replacements.  As it turned out, the result was just the opposite.  Runners did not have higher rates of osteoarthritis or knee replacements.  Other who criticized the study said that the runners may have been in better shape to begin with, but all study subjects were deemed to be in good health in 1980.

This study is one more example of how simple things like exercise make a big difference in future health.  What is not so simple, is taking the time and self-discipline to exercise on a regular basis.  Those inspired by the runner's story should remember to check with their doctor before starting an exercise program - and go slow at first.

As the old saying goes, you have to walk before you can run.

Fall Activities Wrap-Up

This past weekend marks the ending of our fall activities and a successful fall it was.

The cross country teams both competed at the state meet Saturday at the KY Horse Park with the girls placing 14th and the boys 22nd overall.  Congratulations go to Junior Gabby Gonzales for placing 2nd in the girls 3A race and to both teams for qualifying for the state championships.

The marching band completed their marching season this past weekend at the Grand National Championships at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN.  Congratulations to the Marching Raiders on a great season.

The football team was eliminated in the second round of the state football playoffs by Louisville St. Xavier on Friday night.  The team enjoyed a great season with an 8-4 record, were district runners-up and undefeated against their 3 county rivals.

Our attention will now turn to the winter activities that are gearing up: swimming/diving, wrestling, speech/debate, boys and girls basketball, and the academic team.

Develop Emotional Vitality

Some modern writers and business authorities have their own theories about what will make a person successful.  One says it takes 10,000 hours of practice.  Another says a person can't be successful unless his or her parents provide outstanding opportunities to learn.  These ideas have merit, but they don't touch on one quality that would have to be present for success at almost any job.

Harvard professors call it "emotional vitality."  It means having mental and physical energy plus positive wellbeing and the ability to manage emotions.  To put it more simply, being able to look at the glass half full gives people energy that keeps them engaged in their work.  Emotional energy make them feel good more often than not.  Those who have it don't think that life is hard all the time.  And when bad things happen, they can say the trouble is not going to last forever and good things will happen again.

Daniel Goleman's book, Emotional Intelligence, brought legitimacy to the concept that emotional content is at the core of every business deal, no matterhow rational the players believe they are being.  Business consultant Fred Kiel, writing in Business Week, tells of talking with a hot dog server at a Costco lunch counter.  The worker said he had several jobs there since leaving his former job.  Costco is known for treating its people well, but this man was also an excellent example of emotional vitality and forward thinking.   He said he was well paid.  Plus he knew that sooner or later he would be given a better job - one with more responsibility - and that was exciting to him.  He was engaged, positive, and going somewhere.

Remember . . . Make it a great day or not, the choice is yours.

Way to go Vince!

Should Your Child Work in College?

Yes. Studies show that students who work a limited number of hours actually do better in school than those who don't have a job. Fifteen hours a week is the suggested maximum. Earning more than $4,000 a year could put loans and grants in jeopardy.

No. Not if they will work more than 15 hours a week. An American Council on Education analysis of studies shows that those who work more are less likely to graduate in four years. Overall, their academic performance is likely to suffer.

If you are laid off or have increased costs, petition the school for more help. You could get a Parent PLUS loan to cover the gap.

Health Concerns

Thankfully, the overall health of our student population is returning to normal and the number of student absences is almost at normal levels. We typically have a 96% attendance rate and were at 95% earlier this week.

Everyone in the Ryle community should exercise universal precautions (frequent hand-washing, covering coughs and sneezes, not eating or drinking after others) during the coming months. The link for the NKY Health Department has updates on the healthcare situation in our region including factsheets on H1N1. http://www.nkyhealth.org

As a school we will continue to clean common surfaces and areas on a daily basis with germ and virus killing cleaners.
