NORTHERN KENTUCKY TEEN COURT
2016-2017 PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT
August 22, 2016

The Northern Kentucky Teen Court will be back in session on Tuesday, September 13, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. and is looking for local high school students to participate in this exciting program.  Sessions are held each Tuesday through April 18, 2017 at the Campbell County Courthouse; 330 York Street; Newport, KY.

A division of District Court, Teen Court enables local high school students from Boone, Campbell, and Kenton Counties to experience the wheels of justice first-hand.  Student participants serve in all roles of the court system – prosecuting attorney, defense attorney, and juror – with Campbell County District Judge Karen Thomas, Campbell County Circuit Court Judge Fred Stine, and local practicing attorneys presiding over the court proceedings.

Actual juvenile offenders are referred to the court for sentencing by a Teen Court Jury – a true jury of their peers – and represented and prosecuted by members of the Teen Court.  Students who participate in the Program will develop more sophisticated communication styles, as well as improved problem solving, critical thinking, and other valuable skills.

In an effort to avoid conflict with school activities, Teen Court training and court sessions are held in the evening.  Student participants are required to attend all six (6) training sessions, as well as the actual court sessions that occur a maximum of twice a month.

The time spent in Teen Court can be used to fulfill community service requirements and also helps to build an exciting and comprehensive resume for college applications.  There is no cost associated with participating in Teen Court.

REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIATE IN TEEN COURT:
1)      Must be in grade 9 through 12, at least 13 years of age and not over 18 years of age;

2)      Must attend all six training sessions and the swearing in ceremony unless excused by Teen Court Coordinator;

3)      Must commit to an academic year of service starting in October and ending in April.

Please contact Campbell County Chief District Judge Karen Thomas’s office at 292-6322 if you have any questions.
