Ryle High School junior Chelsea Fite,17, has completed the work for her Girl Scout Gold Award, the organization's highest acheivement. As part of the Gold Award project, she decorated, laid new carpet, painted and donated items like a washer and a sweeper to the shelter, located on Scott Street in Covington. Scouts seeking the award have to identify "a need in the community that's lasting" and volunteer atleast 80 hours on the project. "When I went into it, I thought it was just a project," Chelsea said. "Then is became a part of me." "Chelsea has been a true blessing for our shelter and each night that she volunteers brigns a lot of joy to our guests with her positive attitude and willingness to help," shelter director Rachael Winters said in an email. "She has taken the time to get to know our guests and now sees them beyondtheir label of 'homeless' but as a human being like herself. We along with her Grandparents are extremely proud of her.
