Ryle golfers tee off for college

by James Weber   Ryle golfers tee off for college

UNION — They made history for the Ryle High School golf teams this past fall.Ryle seniors Blake Hamilton and Alex Bruce have their eyes on more when they head out to play college golf after graduation.

Hamilton will play for Division I Cincinnati, Bruce will play for Division II Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C.

Hamilton tied for third place in the Kentucky state tournament last fall, leading Ryle to fifth place as a team. Both are the highest finishes in Ryle history, and Hamilton finished three strokes out of first place as he came close to becoming the second boys state champion in Northern Kentucky history.

Bruce tied for 15th in the girls tourney, sharing the spot with freshman teammate Nadine Innes, as they marked the highest finish in Ryle girls history.

Hamilton has been tutoring for most of his years under local golf pro Doug Martin. Martin, one of the area’s top teaching pros, is the UC head coach.

UC’s home course is also Hamilton’s, Traditions in Hebron.

“They play in a lot of great tournaments,” Hamilton said. “Doug Martin has been my swing coach forever. He’s like a father. He’ll keep me on track to what I want to do, which is play professionally when I graduate.”

Bruce was the conference champion last fall after a strong summer in local and national events. Her favorite golf memory was winning the Notre Dame Invitational last season in a sudden-death playoff.

“It was the first playoff I’d won, and it really helped me learn how to play under pressure,” she said. “The whole team was lining the fairway and cheering me on. It’s something I’ll always remember.”

She chose Converse, whose head coach is former LPGA Tour veteran Sara Anne McGetrick.

“She knows how to connect with the teenage population,” Bruce said. “It’s a very secure campus and it’s small, so I’ll get the academic attention I need.”

Bruce enjoys the social aspect of golf.

“It’s great competition,” she said. “It teaches you morals and respect and courtesy. You play with someone for five hours, you meet the person and you get to know them.”

Ryle wrestling foundation built at youth level

by James Weber   Ryle wrestling foundation built at youth level

UNION — Ryle High School has been a state contender in wrestling for most of its 20-year existence. The Raiders have come close to the state team championship several times and have 13 individual state champions.

Those state champs usually start out winning matches as little kids and getting their first medals when their weights still have two digits. The Raider youth program has been going strong for many years.

“A lot of the kids who you see now like (current senior and 2011 state champ) T.J. Ruschell started in the Raider youth program years ago,” said youth head coach Darren Thomas. “Some of them go to Cooper or Walton-Verona, but the majority go to Ryle eventually.”

The youth program won its third straight Kentucky state championship Feb. 19, the first team to win three straight in state history.

About 100 kids participate in the program on a yearly basis. The team trains at New Haven Elementary in Union.

“We start in October and compete against a lot of Cincinnati and southeast Indiana kids in youth wrestling,” Thomas said. “Our kids do very well. We’ve had many of our kids win the state championship in their weight groups from age 5 to eighth-graders.”

The team recently went to the AAU spring nationals in Kingsport, Tenn. Cole Thomas, 8, took third place at 55 pounds and Mason Jakob was a runner-up. Both were named AAU All-Americans. Four others finished fifth in their weights: Shay Horton, Sebastian Vega, Joshua Logan and Cody Donohoo.

At the middle school level, Johnny Meiman and Logan Erdman became two-time middle school state champions as they split time with the varsity squad.

Meiman was a four-time regional champion and five-time state placer. Erdman was a four-time state placer and three-time regional champion.

David Rich was a state champion at 130 and a two-time regional champion.

Thomas is starting weekly clinics at Sports of All Sorts on Mt. Zion Road in Boone County. Clinics are Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9-11 a.m.

Coaches from other schools will give instruction and the clinics are open to all wrestlers. For more information, contact Thomas at 393-3983.

Ryle edges Dixie Heights

by Marc Harden, NKY Enquirer

Don't be deceived by the Ryle softball team's losing record.

The two-time defending 9th Region champion Raiders have seven losses after the first 10 games. They have played mostly top-shelf competition after facing three downstate teams at the Meade County tournament, and three teams from South Carolina, one against a Tennessee squad and one from Ohio at the Azalea Invitational.

"We have a lot of girls at new positions. Early in the season, we're still trying to figure out some things," Ryle coach Patti Oliverio said. "Playing tough teams in tournaments early helps make us better a lot faster."

Exhibit A on Wednesday in Union was sophomore first-year starter Katelyn Stephens. Playing just their second game against a local team, the Raiders narrowly avoided an upset while outlasting Dixie Heights, 7-6, thanks in large part to Stephens' improved situational hitting.

The right-handed-hitting Stephens has been taking in extra sessions as Ryle assistant coach Steve Oliverio's star pupil. She has a penchant for hitting to the opposite field and the coach is working to improve her mechanics at the plate to ensure she continues to be an asset while going the other way with the pitch.

In a game two weeks ago in South Carolina, Stephens' run-scoring hit to the opposite field plated a key run and her confidence soared.

"Now, I'm normally hitting it to right field," she said. "Every time, when I come up, I think I can put it there."

That's what she did Wednesday with the score tied at 6 in the bottom of the seventh inning. With runners on second and third and one out, Stephens took a fastball on the outside part of the plate and laced a double to right field for the game-winning, walk-off hit.

"We have new fielders and Dixie put pressure on us by putting the ball in play early, and that's what we want," Patti Oliverio said. "In the end, it came down to hitting in the seventh and Katelyn has been working hard."

The Raiders carried momentum into their final at-bats after right fielder Sydney Langsdale, with a runner on first and two outs, made a catch of a slicing liner as she sprinted toward the foul line. Langsdale, a first-year starter, said five games in South Carolina has boosted her confidence in the field.

"I usually don't get to those balls," she said. "But I like the opportunity, and I got that one."

Dixie (6-4) jumped on all-region ace Haylee Smith with five hits while plating a pair of first-inning runs against the Raiders (3-7). The Colonels led 6-4 after five.

"We almost made a statement," Dixie coach Roddy Stainforth said.
