Five high school players were named finalists Friday for Kentucky's 2012 Miss Basketball award.
The five are Jeanna Crittenden of Ryle, Sydney Moss of Boone County, Kendall Noble of Perry County Central, Jasmine Whitfield of South Oldham, and April Wilson of Manual.
Of the five players named Friday as finalists for Miss Basketball, only one is still playing in the State Tournament: Manual's April Wilson.
Speaking after the Lady Crimsons routed Montgomery County in the quarterfinals, the 5-foot-7½ guard said being a Miss Basketball finalist is "a blessing."
"It's not one of my main goals, obviously, because I'm an unselfish person. But it would be a huge blessing if I got it. But my eyes are on something else right now — a state championship."
The five finalists for Mr. Basketball will be announced during next week's PNC/KHSAA Boys' State Tournament in Rupp Arena.
The Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation, which sponsors the Mr. and Miss Basketball awards and the Kentucky-Indiana summer all-star series, changed the process for selecting the top boy and girl senior in the state this year. In years past, Mr. and Miss Basketball were determined by a vote of coaches. This year, the coaches' votes determine the top five candidates for Mr. and Miss Basketball. In the weeks following the state tournaments, some sports media, along with former Mr. and Miss Basketball honorees, will vote to select Mr. and Miss Basketball.
The winners will be announced at an awards dinner in Louisville on April 28 in a Heisman Trophy-type ceremony.
