The Ryle Drama Club presents... The Drowsy Chaperone

Winner of five Tony Awards (including Best Original Score) when it hit Broadway in 2006, The Drowsy Chaperone is for people who both love and hate the American musicals of the Jazz Age. The show’s narrator, a mousy, agoraphobic Broadway fanatic seeking a cure for the blues, listens to a recording of an obscure 1928 musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone . As he listens to this rare recording, he and the audience are transported into the musical. The characters appear in his dingy apartment, his cold-water flat is transformed into an impressive Broadway set, and both the narrator and the audience are taken on a 90 minute roller coaster ride of song, dance and laughter.  (Mauer Productions Onstage, 2014)

Performances will be held in the Ryle auditorium this week on:
Thursday, February 27th at 7:30 p.m.
Friday, February 28th at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, March 1st at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Admission is $5 for students and $8 for adults.  All proceeds benefit the Ryle Drama club.

Synopsis:
The Drowsy Chaperone is an homage to American musicals of the Jazz Age, examining the effect musicals have on the fans who adore them.

The Man in Chair, a mousy, agoraphobic Broadway fanatic, seeking to cure his "non-specific sadness", listens to a recording of a fictional 1928 musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone. As he listens to this rare recording, he is transported into the musical. The characters appear in his dingy apartment, and it is transformed into an impressive Broadway set with seashell footlights, sparkling furniture, painted backdrops, and glitzy costumes.  (Mauer Productions Onstage 2014)

Using PLAN/ACT Scores for Scheduling Requests 2014-15

The ACT Corporation has published some very interesting research connecting student's PLAN test scores and their success on Advanced Placement exams later in their high school career.

The PLAN test is taken by all sophomore students and is essentially a shorter version, based on fewer standards, than the ACT test. The ACT test will be taken by all junior students at Ryle on March 4th.

The ACT's research lists PLAN test scores that yield a probability of success on certain AP exams. This information could certainly be used to confirm thinking that a student should take an AP course and exam and could also be used to spur a student to work harder and smarter if their PLAN scores indicate they may not score as high as they wish on the AP exams. This is especially important to consider when completing schedule requests for 2014-15.

Schedule Requests for 2014-15

When making your schedule request for 2014-15 and considering your class choices for the next few years, here is some research from the U.S. Department of Education to consider:

The best predictor of college graduation, based on the records of students, is NOT good high school grades NOR good test scores, but the best predictor is . . .

the number of challenging courses taken in high school.

A student who works hard and struggles in an AP or IB course is better prepared for college than a student who takes an easier course and/or test.

LexCath assistant Engler named new football coach at Ryle

by Mike Fields
Lexington Herald Leader
Mike Engler, who's been an assistant football coach at Lexington Catholic since the program's inception in 1991, is leaving the Knights to become head coach at Ryle.
"It's the perfect situation, one I couldn't pass up," said Engler, who served as offensive coordinator at Lexington Catholic.
He replaces Bryson Warner, who coached Ryle for 11 years before resigning after last season.
Engler said his departure from Lexington Catholic had nothing to do with the Knights' change in head coaches. Bill Letton resigned in early December, and Mark Perry, who had been at Central Hardin, was hired to replace him a few weeks ago.
Engler applied for the Ryle job before Letton stepped down, and he did not apply to succeed Letton at Lexington Catholic.
"I felt like they needed to bring in somebody new to energize the program, and I think Mark Perry will do that," Engler said. "I would've loved working with him because I think he'll do a great, great job at Lexington Catholic."
Engler said he has been looking to get into a public-school position for better pay and benefits for several years, and declined a few offers.
But he couldn't turn down Ryle.
"Everybody I talked to told me how good a school it is," he said. "The football facilities are really nice, and I've been so impressed by everybody I've met there.
"It's got the makings of a championship program."
Engler, 43, was at Ryle on Tuesday for a news conference to announce his hiring, but school was dismissed early because of a forecast for bad weather. So instead of meeting with the football players as a group, he stood in the hallway and met as many as he could as they left school.
"I had a nice speech all planned out and I didn't even get to use it," Engler said with a laugh.
Bob Sphire, who started Lexington Catholic football and was its head coach for 15 years before leaving for a job at North Gwinnett, Ga., said Engler "always had the program at heart and would do anything, take on any responsibility, to help."
Sphire was also impressed by Engler's skills as an offensive coordinator.
"I was amazed by how creative he was," Sphire said. "Even when he was short-handed on players, he had a knack for shuffling the deck and giving kids a chance to be successful."
Ryle is a Class 6A school in the same district with Boone County, Campbell County, Dixie Heights and Simon Kenton. The Raiders lost to Trinity in the 2006 state finals, and to the Shamrocks in the 2010 semifinals. They have struggled recently, going 3-8 in 2012 and 2-9 last season.

Ryle names Mike Engler as its new football coach

Ryle High School went to Lexington to land the fourth head football coach in its 22-year history.

Ryle athletic director Jim Demler made it official Tuesday by announcing in a press release Lexington Catholic offensive coordinator Mike Engler as the new head coach, replacing Bryson Warner, who resigned on Dec. 2 after 11 seasons.

Engler had been an assistant at Lexington Catholic since 1991 and had been assistant head coach and offensive coordinator during his tenure. He helped lead the Knights to a Class 3A state title in 2005 and a Class 4A state title in 2007. Lexington Catholic posted a 218-68 record (.762 winning percentage) during Engler’s tenure.

“Mike has a tremendous football background and a great reputation across the state as an excellent coach,” Demler said. “He comes from a well-respected, tradition-rich program in Lexington Catholic and we feel like he is a great fit to lead our football team.”

Engler met with Ryle’s players on Tuesday.

“My family and I are very excited about the opportunity to become part of the Ryle community,” Engler said in the press release. “We will play an exciting, up-tempo brand of football. I believe the community will be pleased with what they will see in the Ryle football program. Ryle has a great group of kids who will have a chance to be successful both on and off of the field.”

Warner compiled a 73-58 record, and his 2006 team finished as state runner-up in Class 4A.
