Ryle track racing into top form

Written by James Weber

BOONE COUNTY — The Ryle boys track team is certainly not resting on its laurels after winning the regional team championship in 2012.

The Raiders are off to a strong start to the 2013 season, the latest triumph helping Ryle to the combined team championship in the Boone County championship meet April 3. Ryle won the boys meet and finished second in the girls meet, with the combined scores edging St. Henry for the overall title.

The six schools in the county competed, and were only allowed one entrant in each event.

Ryle won eight of the 17 boys events. Nick Kennedy won the 100 meters and long jump. Michael Finkelstein won both the shot put and discus. Michael Bateman won the 200, and the Raiders won all three sprint relays.

“We’ve had a considerable amount of depth, which has really helped us,” said Ryle boys head coach Russell Harden. “We don’t have to run everybody in multiple events every meet. We can get guys more practice. It’s been very fortunate.”

Kennedy, one of the area’s top returning runners, is coming off three regional championships in the 100 and 200 meters and the long jump.

“Nick has had an excellent season so far,” Harden said. “He’s been winning long jump by 12 to 18 inches every meet. We look to keep him going moving forward. We’ve had a lot of success in the sprints. Our throwing events have been outstanding with Michael Finkelstein.”

Ryle won three girls events, Alexandra Patterson in the 400, Jacqueline Jones in the 1,600 and Ashlee Howe in the triple jump.

Ryle will host its annual relay meet Thursday, April 18, which will have the same format for the conference championships Tuesday, April 23. The conference meet is a major regular season goal for Ryle and others.

“The Ryle Relays is usually earlier in the year,” Harden said. “We decided to move it back and use the meet to prepare for conference. A lot of the teams we’ll be competing against at conference will be there.”

In the Boone meet, St. Henry won the girls championship, claiming seven events. Holly Blades (3,200), Sam Hentz (high jump), Cheyenne Tobler (shot put) and Sierra Harlan (discus) won solo events, and St. Henry won three relays.

In the boys meet, Craig Aldridge won the high jump and triple jump, and Austin Eibel the 300 hurdles.

Boone County senior Jessica Jones had an outstanding meet, winning three events for the Rebels.

Cooper was second in the boys meet, winning five events. The Jaguars won twice in the girls meet. Walton-Verona had two champions and Conner one.

Ryle archers shoot for the stars

From the Union Recorder . . .

UNION — It has been nearly 10 years since Brenda Klaas was roped in by the skill needed in archery.

Since then, the Ryle High School educator has built the largest archery club in Northern Kentucky. And she hopes the sport keeps building.

Ryle will find out April 10 if it will be able to participate in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) national championships May 11-12 in Louisville. The higher finishers in the recent state tournament get dibs on qualifying spots.

Archery just finished its first season under Kentucky High School Athletic Association jurisdiction and awarded championships concurrent with the NASP titles awarded in March. Ryle was not sanctioned by the KHSAA this season, but the Raiders did well in the NASP competition.

“If we had been sanctioned this year, we would have been regional runner-up and had two regional medalists,” Klaas said.

Ryle was 27th in the state competition overall. The team score was a combination of both genders, with at least five of each gender required. Players shot 30 arrows, with a maximum of 10 points for hitting the narrow bullseye in the middle of the target.

In the boys tourney, Sam Loehrke finished 49th with a score of 285 out of a perfect 300. The field had 758 boys entered. Raiders Jack Kirby and Ryan Gilbert tied for 117th with 278.

In girls, Elizabeth Shouse shot 275 to finish 72nd out of 508 entrants, and Emily Fair shot 265 to finish 168th.

Klaas, the school technology coordinator at Ryle, started the program in 2004 after her husband took her to the state tournament to support a friend in the Highlands High School program. She quickly saw the sport was something that her students could enjoy.

“There were kids four feet tall next to kids six feet tall, and they were on a level playing field,” she said. “I’ve seen kids with disabilities and in wheelchairs shooting, and blind kids shooting. It was a great program and I thought this will be great for Ryle.”

Klaas has 70 members in the Ryle program, and another 100 shoot the arrows at Gray Middle School on the same campus. She said interest has grown in the past couple of years with the popularity of the Hunger Games book series. The series, which boasts Union native Josh Hutcherson as a major character in the movie versions, has a bow and arrow as the weapon of choice for characters including the main heroine, Katniss Everdeen.

“I get people all the time who ask me for private lessons,” Klaas said. “That was a major spark.”

She said Cooper will soon become the second high school in the county to start a program. Only a handful of Northern Kentucky schools participated in the tournaments this year.

Klaas, whose daughter Cailtyn is on the varsity team, said archery narrows a student’s focus.

“When you’re in the competition, it’s getting them to focus on sticking to the routine, not rushing, and not letting your competitors get into your head,” she said. “If you have a bad shot, you have to let it go.”

Ryle heads to Odyssey finals

From the NKY Enquirer . . .

Ryle High School’s Odyssey of the Mind team is going to the world competition.

The team competed in Division 3 doing “Problem 4: Tumble Wood.” At regional, the team received first place along with the Ránatra Fusca Creativity Award stating they were the most creative out of the rest of the teams at regionals.

At state Ryle received second place and won the Ránatra Fusca Creativity Award, the highest award possible.

They are now going to the world competition at Michigan State University.

Members are seniors Daniel Jensen and Paul Yoder; junior Daniel Kozar; sophomores Jack Kirby, Samuel Greenhill, Rena Ryumae, and Anna Braun.

Jensen won the Odyssey of the Mind-Mike Mullins scholarship being chosen out of the 24 applicants.

The team is accepting donations for the trip to the world finals. The cost is $2,500 not including hotel, gas and food.

Ryle heads to Odyssey finals

New doubles pair key for Ryle girl’s tennis success

From the NKY Enquirer . . .

Ryle coach Stephen Collins said as opposed to previous seasons where the roster has been in place, this year, outside of four returning starters, there are three spots up for grabs. Collins said 24 players have tried out for the squad’s open positions.

“I like the fact that you do have a nucleus of returning players but there are still a couple spots to fight for,” Collins said. “I think this year the girls have a little bit more fire because there are open spots. That always keeps them hungry.”
New doubles partners, seniors Harlee Hornsby and Meghan Watson will be crucial for the Raiders success, as well as first singles player, sophomore Carley Lucas. Collins praised the chemistry of Hornsby and Watson that has developed in the off-season.
“The two will make a good fit,” Collins said. “They make a really good doubles team because they can counteract each others flaws, which is key at this level.”
Hornsby was ousted in the regional tournament last season and lost in the first round of the state tournament. She was 13-5 last season playing first doubles and has traveled to the state tournament two years in a row. Ryle has had traditionally strong doubles teams in the past. The Raiders have sent a pair to state for the past eight seasons.
Collins said Lucas has also been working diligently on her game by training in the off-season and competing in various tournaments over the course of the summer. She was 6-10 last season playing first singles.

Ryle Baseball is Off to a Hot Start!

The Ryle baseball team has started their season 8-0 after a victory over Cooper HS yesterday at home. See the NKY Enquirer article below.

Ryle 7, Cooper 2: Mitchell See picked up the victory to improve to 2-0 on the year and kept Ryle, tied for No. 2 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches’ poll, undefeated at 8-0.

Cooper led 1-0 after the top of the first, but Thomas Baumann tripled in the tying run in the bottom of the first and later scored the go-ahead run in the same inning for Ryle.

Cooper, also ranked No. 2 in the Enquirer coaches’ poll, fell to 6-3 with the loss.
