Spirit of America

A few friends have told me about a great show that tells the story of the U.S. Army over the generations.  The show is called the Spririt of America and will performed for free at NKU's Bank of Kentucky Center in September.  The show is free but you must get tickets.

Take some time to reflect and to thank those who have served our country and have a great Memorial Day!

KHEAA - Planning and Preparing for College

The Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) has information on financial aid and nearly every other aspect of attending college after high school.  Here's one article from their website:

Tassel: Worth the hassle?

Education past high school can be as much or as little as you want! Trade school, two-year and four-year degrees are all options past high school.

Going to school after graduation may be the last thing you want to hear about. But graduating from college increases your job opportunities, your earning power and your ability to enjoy a better life.

Get a bachelor's degree, and you can make nearly $16,000 a year more than your friends with just a high school diploma. Do the math: $15,637 times a 40-year career equals more than half a million dollars ($625,480 to be exact). Even if you don't like math, you have to love that!

If you drop out, your friends who earn bachelor's degrees will earn over $950,000 more than you over a 40-year career — that's like hitting the lottery.

Information from the U.S. Census Bureau shows median earnings increase with higher education:

•An associate's degree can mean 19 percent more income than just a high school diploma.
•A bachelor's degree can mean 62 percent more income than just a high school diploma.
•A master's degree can mean 92 percent more income than just a high school diploma.

Median Kentucky earnings by educational level for workers 25 or older employed full time; unemployment for workers 25 or older.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Brian Goessling of Union is one of 12 University of Louisville scholars selected to study abroad through the Fulbright Student Program, a prestigious international exchange scholarship sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.
Goessling expects to complete his UofL graduate degree in electrical engineering this summer. After a monthlong German language course, he will use his Fulbright research grant to study at the University of Freiburg's Institute of Microsystems Engineering and participate in a research project about microenergy harvesting.

The Fulbright program is a federally sponsored international educational and cultural exchange that recognizes academic merit and leadership potential. The program promotes mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those in more than 155 countries through the exchange of people and knowledge. Fulbrights are considered one of the most prominent awards in academia.
Since 2003, UofL students have received 44 Fulbright scholarships, more than any other university in Kentucky.

While at UofL, Goessling has been active in the Speed School Student Council, the Resources for Academic Achievement (REACH) program, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and Catholic Campus Ministry.
