The Ninth Region girls' basketball tournament claimed its first upset victim on Tuesday.
Ryle, the top-ranked team in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, was stunned 72-62 by No. 4 Notre Dame Academy, which rode a hot-shooting first half to a first-round victory at Northern Kentucky University.
The Pandas will play Newport Central Catholic in a semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Friday. NewCath beat Notre Dame 55-53 on Feb. 11.
Ryle, a four-point winner over Notre Dame two weeks ago following a furious second-half comeback, rallied from an 18-point first-half deficit on Tuesday. The Raiders made it a five-point game on four occasions in the final three minutes, but each time the Pandas answered.
