Using PLAN/ACT Scores for Scheduling Requests

The ACT Corporation has published some very interesting research connecting student's PLAN test scores and their success on Advanced Placement exams later in their high school career.

The PLAN test is taken by all sophomore students and is essentially a shorter version, based on fewer standards, than the ACT test. The ACT test will be taken by all junior students at Ryle on March 6th.

The ACT's research lists PLAN test scores that yield a probability of success on certain AP exams. This information could certainly be used to confirm thinking that a student should take an AP course and exam and could also be used to spur a student to work harder and smarter if their PLAN scores indicate they may not score as high as they wish on the AP exams. This is especially important to consider when completing schedule requests for 2012-13.

Ryle remains unbeaten on home court

A furious second half run and perfect shooting from the free throw line in overtime helped Ryle shake off a sluggish start against Notre Dame on Tuesday and remain unbeaten on its home court this season.

The Raiders outscored the Pandas 19-9 in overtime for a 63-53 victory. Junior guard Dawn Johnson scored all of her eight points in overtime while senior forward Jenna Crittendon contributed seven of her team-high 19.

Ryle, ranked No. 2 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky Coaches’ poll, is now 12-0 at home and 23-5 overall this season.

“It felt great,” Crittendon said. “They’re a really tough team, knocked us out of in the regional last year. Notre Dame’s always tough. They don’t give up. They have a great coach. So it felt pretty good.
“And we haven’t lost on our home court yet, so that was a big win for us.”

Notre Dame junior forward Olivia Voskuhl led the Pandas with 19 points, including a 3-pointer to tie the game at 44 with 22.7 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Ranked No. 3 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches’ poll, Notre Dame (21-5) led by two in overtime when Crittendon made a 3-pointer from the corner to put the Raiders ahead 49-48 for good with 2:03 to go.

“I’m proud of the girls for coming back in the overtime and doing all the little things,” Ryle head coach Patti Oliverio said. “We hit 10 free throws down the stretch. We were 10-for-10, so that was key.”

Four of those free throws came with 1:02 left in overtime.

With her team leading by three, Johnson was fouled and due two shots. Notre Dame coach Nicole Levandusky protested the call to the extent she was assessed a technical foul.

Johnson made her two free throws. Teammate Ashley Cheesman made the two shots for the technical, giving the Raiders a 57-50 lead.

“We had some letdowns defensively that they took advantage of and it was just too much of a hole to dig out of,” Levandusky said. “Obviously, my technical didn’t help anything.”

It was Cheesman who sparked a 21-2 second half run by the Raiders.  The senior guard cut into a 10-point Notre Dame lead by hitting Ryle’s first 3-pointer of the game with 16.7 seconds remaining in the third quarter. She made another one at the start of the fourth to pull the Raiders to within four points, 31-27.

UofL student from Union will study at University of Cambridge

Erin Sheehy graduated from Larry A. Ryle High School

 

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — University of Louisville junior Erin Sheehy has received an English-Speaking Union Scholarship to study during the summer at University of Cambridge in England.

Sheehy, an English and Exercise Science major, will spend part of the summer at Cambridge as part of that university’s literature program, which focuses on the analysis and implications of classic and modern English literature. The scholarship is funded by the Kentucky Branch of the English-Speaking Union.

Sheehy is an honors student who is involved in the university’s health promotion and mentoring programs. She is also active in the Catholic Campus Ministry. In addition to her English-Speaking Union Scholarship, she was also awarded UofL’s Trustee’s Scholarship, an award that goes to Kentucky high school students with outstanding academic performance.

A 2009 graduate from Larry A. Ryle High School, Sheehy is the daughter of Maureen and Philip Sheehy, both of Union.

Scheduling Requests for 2012-13

When making your schedule request for 2012-13 and considering your class choices for the next few years, here is some research from the U.S. Department of Education to consider:

The best predictor of college graduation, based on the records of students, is NOT good high school grades NOR good test scores, but the best predictor is . . .

the number of challenging courses taken in high school.

A student who works hard and struggles in an AP or IB course is better prepared for college than a student who takes an easier course and/or test.

Ryle's Cory Chitwood closing career

Arizona senior swimmer Cory Chitwood, a Ryle graduate, won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:46.54, the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:42.78, and was a member of the second place 400-yard medley relay team that finished in 3:12.05, helping the No. 1-ranked Wildcats defeat No. 2 Texas 155-88. It was the final home meet of his career.

Chitwood won the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke against No. 3 Stanford the previous week.

He has the fastest time in the nation in the 200-yard backstroke, and is second in the nation in the 100 yard backstroke and 200 yard individual medley.
