Lloyd Cooper Passes Away

On Monday, Lloyd Cooper, passed away at the age of 79 in Raceland, KY.

Lloyd Cooper was the father of the late Randy Cooper, who was the founding principal of Larry A. Ryle High School in 1992 and the namesake of our sister-school Randall K. Cooper High School.

Lloyd Cooper was a great friend and supporter of Ryle High School. Years ago, he and his wife were often seen at Ryle school events. He will be truly missed.

Our condolences and prayers go out to the Cooper family at this time.

Kyle Ginnever - Class of 2007

It is very sad to learn that Kyle Ginnever, a graduate from Ryle in 2007, was struck and killed by a train on Friday morning.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.

Beating Boone bodes well for Ryle

Ryle girls' soccer coach Edmundo Echeverria is wary of high-scoring Boone County as the Raiders and Rebels attempt to unseat three-time defending district champion St. Henry, which lost eight starters from last season's state championship team.

Ryle, which hasn't won a 17th District crown since 2006, and Boone, without one since 2007, view 2011 as a year of opportunity. The Raiders enhanced their chances of district success by defeating the Rebels 1-0 on Wednesday in a seeding game at Ryle.

Lauren Zembrodt scored the lone goal off a pass from Lauren Duggins at the 30:44 mark of the first half.

"Lauren had three people on her and I told her to lay it off middle, and I came down with nobody on me and shot it," said Zembrodt, who scored for the third time this season.

Ryle's reconfigured defense and goalkeeper Lindsay Otis, who turned aside four shots, made the lead stand up over the final 50 minutes.

"I thought we played great defense and did a good job of controlling pace," Echeverria said. "We can't get into a kickball match with Boone because it'll hurt you, so I'm proud of the girls for having moments of brilliant soccer."

Schmalzl dedicated to Boone schools

With continued budget cuts, increasingly stringent core content standards and a push to get more students involved in extracurricular activities, local parent volunteer Mary Schmalzl's goal is to make life a little easier for teachers - and a little more fun for students.

Schmalzl, of Walton, has been part of the PTA and volunteered within Boone County Schools for nearly 20 years. As all three of her children have progressed through New Haven Elementary, Gray Middle and Ryle High schools, she has brought a variety of extracurricular activities and community service opportunities to the schools.

Over the years, she's coached successful Odyssey of the Mind, Math Counts and Future Problem Solving teams, and helped organize a variety of events, including Ryle's annual craft show. Recently, she started a Community Problem Solving Team, which allows students to use problem-solving skills and community service hours to help solve problems locally.

"All of these programs help kids become better thinkers," said Schmalzl, who currently coaches both Gray and Ryle's Future Problem Solving teams, serves as the team photographer for Ryle's girls' soccer team and is still an active member of the school's PTA.

The programs are still flourishing at the schools, and Schmalzl's Future Problem Solving team at Ryle just placed seventh overall at the Future Problem Solving Program International Conference, and two students from her teams - Tess Chaffee from Gray and Lenny Ivey from Ryle - placed first at the conference.

I am calling to remind you that the Ryle PTSA will be hosting their annual open house at Ryle High School tonight September 1st at 7:00 pm in the Ryle auditorium. Please make plans to attend, this is a great opportunity to visit the school and meet your child’s classroom teachers, counselors, and principals. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday.

Also remember that school pictures will be taken next Thursday, Sept. 8^th during the school day.

The 2011-12 school year is off to a great start and we are very proud of our students and staff and are very pleased with their progress. Now that we are almost 3 weeks into the school year, our Academic Support Process has begun and if your student has a failing grade in a class the teachers will contact both you and your student and recommend a course of action. If you have questions or concerns please call the school office at 384-5300 and our staff will assist you.
