• We will continue the Pasta For Pennies this week on Wednesday and Thursday.  You MUST turn in your box at lease one time this week to have a chance to win the Pasta or Pizza Party.  Our last day of collection will be next Wednesday, March 20th.  Our total after last week is $1689.98.  We need to really empty our pockets to make our school goal of $3000.00.  Remember all donations are tax deductible so ask your family and friends to support our class.

• Congratulations to our Ryle Odyssey of the Mind Team; Daniel Jensen, Paul Yoder, Rena Ryumae, Daniel Kozar, Jack Kirby, Anna Braun and Samuel Greenhill.  They won the Ranatra Fusca Creativity Award and placed 2nd at the Odyssey of the Mind State Competition March 9th and are now headed to the World Finals!

• Attention Math Honor Society:  There will be a meeting after school on Wednesday, March 13th, in the auditorium.

• Attention Math Honor Society:   PI day party is this Thursday after school in Mrs. K's room.  Sign ups to bring food and drinks for points are on the back of her door.

• The English Honor Society Meeting for Wednesday, March 13th has been rescheduled for March 21st. There was a conflict with the Math Honor Society.  Foiled again!

• The Speech & Debate Team will be hosting a Coffeehouse where they will be showcasing some of their performers.  Come out March 28th and support the team.  See English teachers for extra credit opportunities.

• Sad that Ryle didn't have an "Off Broadway" production this year? Wish poetry open mic nights weren't so far away?  Tired of performing your circus act for your dog?  Now's your chance to audition for "Ryle's Got Talent", this year's talent show!  Auditions will be held Wednesday, March 27th.  See Ms. Page in Room 218 for audition details.

• Attention Peer Tutors:  Wednesday RAP for Peer Tutors 1 & 2 has been rescheduled for March 13th.  If anyone has a situation that prevents them from attending it is your responsibility to contact Mrs. Babik no later than Wednesday afternoon.
• Attention English Honor Society Members:  We will meet on Wed., Mar. 13th in the Lower Commons for about 15 minutes.  We will have a service opportunity directly following for about an hour.  If you stay for service, please sign up in Room 129. 
• The Bible Study Club will meet after school today in Room 234.
• All students competing at FBLA Regional Conference please meet after school today @ 2:25 for a brief mandatory meeting.
• Attention all Math Honor Society Members:  Don't forget about the Pi Day Party on Thursday.  Sign ups will be up this week!

2013 National German Exam

Please join usin congratulating and celebrating the following hard-working young men and women for their terrific results on the 2013 National German Exam!!  Below are highlights of the "best of the best" and the attached spreadsheet lists the names of all the "All Stars."  Each finished in the 70% for each level or higher.

General Info. - Total participants nationally - 19,679

German 2 and 2 Honors - 8,319

German 3 Honors - 6,382

German 4 (AP) - 4,978

German 2/2 Honors - 14 students finished in the 90% or higher (gold awards), 16 additional students finished in the 80% - 89% range (silver awards) and 7 more students finished in the 70% - 79% range (bronze awards).

• Attention Girls' Tennis:  There will be no practice today.  We will practice Saturday, March 9th, from 10:30 am to noon.  Meet at the tennis courts.
• Attention French Honor Society:  For all seniors in FHS, all points are due on March 29th.  If you do not complete all 20 pts you will not receive a cord!  
• There will be a French Honor Society meeting on Tues., Mar. 12th after school in Ms. Naziripour's room.
• Attention English Honor Society:  There will be an EHS meeting on Wed., Mar. 13th.  There will be a volunteer points opportunity after the meeting.
• Attention Football Players:  If you have not received equipment please report to fieldhouse Friday after school.

Community Service by Mrs. Rechtin

At Ryle High School, where I teach, instilling a giving spirit in our students is part of our tradition. Most of us would agree that teaching young people to give back to the community is a laudable goal, but how do you do that?  Sometimes all it takes is a simple idea, encouragement from adults, and allowing the students to run with it.

Several years ago, a teacher started encouraging the students to turn in used but still usable school supplies at the end of each year.  The supplies are sorted and given out at the beginning of the next school year to anyone who wants to shop. It has become a habit for students to drop off anything that they cannot use anymore so that someone else can use it.  Some students even go through the trash cans at locker cleanout to make sure usable items are saved!  I have heard students say that they have not bought a binder in their four years at Ryle. This is a simple idea that has been a real service to many students and that has taught service to many as well.

Another teacher heard that the Parish Kitchen, an organization that serves 1600 meals per week to those in need, was in search of homemade desserts to serve.  Thus the “Bake for the Parish Kitchen” project was born.  Each week during October one of the classes, starting with the freshmen and ending with the seniors, baked desserts and brought them in on Friday’s to be sent to the Parish Kitchen. According to Dan Nolan, PK director, on the last Friday, “The van was so full that I was able to share some of the baked goods with Welcome House and Fairhaven Rescue Mission.” Again, this was a simple idea that helped many people.

These are just two of the many projects that go on at Ryle.  These projects help our students realize that though no one person can do everything, each of us has the capability to do something that will make a difference in the life of another.

So now I ask you—do you have a simple idea that can be developed into a project to help others at your school, your workplace, or even your home?  If so, what are you waiting for?  Go do it.

Happy Monday!

• Please read prior announcements
• Congratulations to the Varsity & JV Cheerleaders for winning 1st place at NKCCA Cheer Competition!  Also, Congratulations to the Ryle Varsity Cheerleaders for winning Grand Champions!
• Attention students looking for volunteer hours:  You can volunteer for the Benton Farm Spring Fair held on Sat., Mar. 23rd from 10 am to 2 pm.  See Mr. Tubbs in Room 137 or Cody Moore for additional information.
• The Bible Study Club will meet after school today in room 234.
• Softball practice is 5-7 pm today.
• FBLA practice for Regionals is cancelled today.
• Attention Seniors:  Senior Exit Information is due this Friday, March 8th to Mr. Niemi's office- room 100.  This includes the Commitment Form, 3 copies of your letter of application and 3 copies of your resume.  Any student who fails to turn in these documents by the deadline of Friday, March 8th will not receive full credit.
• The end of the third grading quarter is March 12th.
• No school for students on Friday, March 15th.  Teachers will have a Professional Development Day.
• Pasta for Pennies collections are today, Wed., & Friday for this week.  As of today, we have raised a little over $1400.00 towards our school goal of $3000.00 to help cure cancer, and this week we want to do it again!  Please collect money these days and send the boxes to the main office.  Here are the standings from last week:  1st- Mrs. Dorgan 2nd- Ms. Delaney 3rd- Mrs. Schwartz 4th- Mrs. Evans 5th- Mr. Woolf 6th- Mrs. Dews 7th- Mrs. Rechtin 8th- Mrs. Raterman 9th- Mrs. Bates 10th- Ms. Reed  Remember 1st place gets an Olive Garden Lunch & 2nd- 4th gets pizza parties!  We still have 2 more weeks after this week so there's plenty of time for your 5th period class to take the lead!!!!

• Attention AP Students: Just a reminder that the AP money is due on Fri., March 8th. Multiple tests can be paid for with one check made out to Ryle High School.
• Attention JR Board Members: Junior Board Meeting in Room 104 on Tues., March 5th @ 2:30 pm
• Reminder: Friday School today is in room 215! Have all necessary supplies with you.
• Softball practice is cancelled today & Saturday. Next practice is Monday from 3-5 pm
• All peer tutors need to meet at the beginning of RAP on Wed., March 6th in room 213. If you are unable to attend for any reason, it is your responsibility to find Mrs. Babik by Friday, March 8th.
• Attention all Freshman Mentors: There will be a meeting in the lower commons at 8:45 am on Thurs., March 7th.
• Attention NHS students and other Ryle students who want to get their volunteer hours in for the year: Mrs. Taylor, the librarian at Erpenbeck Elementary, needs your help working her book fair. Please come to the library and sign up.
