FCCLA participates in the Walk to Cure Diabetes

This past weekend the Ryle chapter of the FCCLA (Family, Careers, and Community Leaders of America) participated in the 2011 Newport Walk to Cure Diabetes at Riverboat Row in Newport.  Proceeds from the Walk go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Ryle plans 20th homecoming parade, seeks past queens

UNION – Ryle High School will be hosting its 20th homecoming parade at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30.
The parade will travel from Union Baptist Church, 1985 Mt. Zion Road, to U.S. 42 and will end at the school.

Mt. Zion Road from Old Union Road to U.S. 42 and U.S. 42 from the Mt. Zion intersection to the Frogtown Road intersection will be closed from 5:45 p.m. to about 7 p.m.

Ryle shuts out Conner

Lady Raiders clinch top seed in district girls soccer

Junior center midfielder Meredith Murphy fired in a shot from 25 yards out as Ryle clinched the top seed in its district by edging Conner, 1-0 on Wednesday.

The Raiders are 3-0 in district play with just Cooper remaining on its district schedule.

Senior Lindsay Otis stopped five shots to record her second straight shutout and her fifth solo blanking of the season.

HALFTIME: 0-0. GOAL: R—Murphy. SHUTOUT: Otis (5 saves). RECORDS: Ryle 6-4-3, Conner 4-8.

Sciarra leads Ryle past Boone

Junior Scores Both of the Match's Goals

Junior striker Tyrus Sciarra scored both goals as Ryle beat Boone County, 2-0 on Thursday.

Sciarra headed in a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Cray McCarthy in the first half to give the Raiders the lead.  Sciarra extended the Ryle lead by knocking in a centering pass from the corner by McCarthy in the second half.

Senior Chris Froschauer turned four shots aside to record his fifth shutout of the season.

The win extended the Raiders’ unbeaten streak to 13 matches (10-0-3).

A True Kentucky Hero

Earlier today Dakota Meyer was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Obama at the White House.  Meyer, of Greensburg, Kentucky, is a former member of the U.S. Marine Corps and is one of the few living soldiers to receive the award.  Below is an excerpt from the official proclamation granting Meyer the highest honor awarded for valor by the U.S. military.

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the repeated risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as a member of Marine Embedded Training Team 2-8, Regional Corps Advisory Command 3-7, in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, on 8 September 2009. When the forward element of his combat team began to be hit by intense fire from roughly 50 Taliban insurgents dug-in and concealed on the slopes above Ganjgal village, Corporal Meyer mounted a gun-truck, enlisted a fellow Marine to drive, and raced to attack the ambushers and aid the trapped Marines and Afghan soldiers. During a six hour fire fight, Corporal Meyer single-handedly turned the tide of the battle, saved 36 Marines and soldiers and recovered the bodies of his fallen brothers. Four separate times he fought the kilometer up into the heart of a deadly U-shaped ambush. During the fight he killed at least eight Taliban, personally evacuated 12 friendly wounded, and provided cover for another 24 Marines and soldiers to escape likely death at the hands of a numerically superior and determined foe. On his first foray his lone vehicle drew machine gun, mortar, rocket grenade and small arms fire while he rescued five wounded soldiers. His second attack disrupted the enemy’s ambush and he evacuated four more wounded Marines. Switching to another gun-truck because his was too damaged they again sped in for a third time, and as turret gunner killed several Taliban attackers at point blank range and suppressed enemy fire so 24 Marines and soldiers could break-out. Despite being wounded, he made a fourth attack with three others to search for missing team members. Nearly surrounded and under heavy fire he dismounted the vehicle and searched house to house to recover the bodies of his fallen team members. By his extraordinary heroism, presence of mind amidst chaos and death, and unselfish devotion to his comrades in the face of great danger, Corporal Meyer reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.”

Meyer has stated numerous times that he is not a hero and should have acted sooner and should have done more to save his fellow soldiers.  His modesty and humble attitude only make him a greater person and a true hero.

Remembering 9-11

We will always remember the innocent people killed and the brave people that responded to save the injured on 9-11-2001.

We will never forget.

Lady Raiders Down St. Henry in OT

Big win for the Lady Raiders soccer team as they improve their record to 5-4-2 overall and 2-0 in the district.  Go Lady Raiders!

Senior Jessica Evans scored in overtime to lift Ryle to a 5-4 win over St. Henry on Wednesday.  Evans scored less than four minutes into the extra session off a direct kick by senior center midfielder Lauren Zembrodt.  Junior midfielder Meredith Murphy added two goals for the Raiders, who have lost just one of their last seven matches.

St. Henry junior Libby Leedom was injured in the game. Leedom, who scored her team-high 12th goal in the match, likely has a broken wrist, Crusaders coach Steve Lorenz said.
