NORTHERN KENTUCKY TEEN COURT
2016-2017 PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT
August 22, 2016

The Northern Kentucky Teen Court will be back in session on Tuesday, September 13, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. and is looking for local high school students to participate in this exciting program.  Sessions are held each Tuesday through April 18, 2017 at the Campbell County Courthouse; 330 York Street; Newport, KY.

A division of District Court, Teen Court enables local high school students from Boone, Campbell, and Kenton Counties to experience the wheels of justice first-hand.  Student participants serve in all roles of the court system – prosecuting attorney, defense attorney, and juror – with Campbell County District Judge Karen Thomas, Campbell County Circuit Court Judge Fred Stine, and local practicing attorneys presiding over the court proceedings.

Actual juvenile offenders are referred to the court for sentencing by a Teen Court Jury – a true jury of their peers – and represented and prosecuted by members of the Teen Court.  Students who participate in the Program will develop more sophisticated communication styles, as well as improved problem solving, critical thinking, and other valuable skills.

In an effort to avoid conflict with school activities, Teen Court training and court sessions are held in the evening.  Student participants are required to attend all six (6) training sessions, as well as the actual court sessions that occur a maximum of twice a month.

The time spent in Teen Court can be used to fulfill community service requirements and also helps to build an exciting and comprehensive resume for college applications.  There is no cost associated with participating in Teen Court.

REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIATE IN TEEN COURT:
1)      Must be in grade 9 through 12, at least 13 years of age and not over 18 years of age;

2)      Must attend all six training sessions and the swearing in ceremony unless excused by Teen Court Coordinator;

3)      Must commit to an academic year of service starting in October and ending in April.

Please contact Campbell County Chief District Judge Karen Thomas’s office at 292-6322 if you have any questions.

Construction Update 8-16-2016

Here is the latest on construction project.  The building inspector has approved the building for occupancy and we are working to take care of few minor things in preparation for Day 1.  Parts of the outside areas around the school are officially construction zones - requiring hard hats - and are off limits to the students and the general public for safety reasons.

Here is Door D-1, sidewalk is ready along with ramp to mobile classrooms M1 - M4.  Both sides are fenced in for safety purposes.

Here is Door C-1, also ready to go.  The area across the bus loop is a construction zone and is off-limits to the staff, students, and general public due to safety.  A parent asked me the other day if the hillside will be be cleared and ready for sledding in the winter.  A very interesting question - maybe not for this year, but we'll see.

The stairwell in the commons is not quite complete - waiting on the railings, risers, and treads to be installed.  Should be ready soon.  We have walled off the area to keep everyone safe.

Here is the lower commons with the temporary wall in place.  The new carpet has been installed and tables will be ready for students tomorrow.  Our Art teachers plan to hang some student artwork on the walls to spruce things up a bit.
